BradVincent Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 I want a DIY led for my sump to grow SPS frags to trade. I have several rb luxeon k's and meanwell drivers lying around. I don't have a heatsink or fan. Can someone recommend something? Looks don't matter and sound only a little. Primary concern is price, but I want something easy to work with that will last. Also, what other colors should I add?
evilc66 Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 If growth is your only concern, then you can just go with a white and royal blue setup. It's not going to give the best color though. If you do care about coral color, then treat it exactly like you would for a display tank with a full spectrum setup. If you want simple, get a V3 array from Nano Box Reef. Takes all of the guesswork out of the equation as far as the LEDs are concerned. You didn't specify what Meanwell drivers you have, so they may or may not work depending on the length of the string connected to it.
BradVincent Posted February 13, 2016 Author Posted February 13, 2016 I was mainly looking for advice on heatsinks or enclosures
evilc66 Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 Simple setup would be a big heatsink from HeatsinkUSA.com. Nothing fancy, but they work. If you want something a little more finished, then you can get the MakersLED Heatsink or MakersHeatsink Slim. Some of it will depend on how much wattage you ultimately want to run. The Slim heatsink won't be able to support as much heat as the full size MakersLED heatsink with a fan.
BradVincent Posted February 15, 2016 Author Posted February 15, 2016 I have no experience with tslots, but like the idea of attaching LEDs without thermal epoxy. Worth getting something like that? Or better with a heatsink usa product?
evilc66 Posted February 15, 2016 Posted February 15, 2016 T-slot does make life pretty easy (you still have to use thermal compound though). The only compelling reason to get a standard heatsink is if the t-slot options don't work for you from a size perspective.
