Well after a break from this hobby I have found that it has drawn me back in. We just moved into a new house and the boys are wanting a tank again. I of course just do not feel right with not having a reef of some kind in a glass box. So I have come to the terms that a large reef is just not in the budget with the boys at this time in life. I happen to pick up a nice nano set up in a trade for a Jeep part that I never used. I am hoping this will allow me the chance to have a reef tank as well as a larger tank for a FOWLR. I did the research and have verified that this is a gen 2 IM Nuvo 24 gallon tank. I also have seen the failures with the earlier ones. The potential is great with the layout of the tank and the viewing area is nice to have in a nano. Please join me in this new build as I try to get back into the water.

Next part of this build is to get a stand, pump, ato tank, RO unit, and supplies before the tank can get wet. I really believe this can be a epic build if done right.

While test running the light I ran into a little issue. At 100% on both channels it could not take the heat. There is some melting and distortion of the plastic. I have read that the first generation lights had some issues. I am waiting on a response from the OEM to see if the light can be saved, operated at a lower % range, or needs to be scraped all together. I know I will be getting another light in the future, but would like this one as a back up of if it can be saved then keep it. The features are pretty sweet on the fixture.

Talked with the OEM and the light can be saved. I ordered a new driver to install in the light. $50 fix. They responded back in a very timely manner as well.

Picked up a TV stand this weekend to be used a the tank Stand. I was not easy finding something that fit the 36" long tank that would be built well enough to hold the tank, match the decor in the room, and be able to hide every thing inside it. Next on the list is to frost the glass to hide the unsightly equipment below, find a holding tank for the ATO, and mount the power strips to the inside to hide clean up the wiring. planned on running the ATO, heater, return pumps, skimmer, and the circulation pump on one strip. This way it would be easy to turn off for water changes. Then everything else on another strip. The light has a built in timer so no need to worry about that.

Here is a room view. Please excuse the house. We just closed and moved in about a month ago and it is not all the way complete on the decor yet. Also the dog has to photo bomb the pic.

a little closer view.

Frosted the glass doors on the stand to hide the contents. I also mount power strips in the stand as well as add a RO water tank for the ATO.

Photo of the back chamber. On the intake side closest in the photo will be filter floss, purigen, and carbon in the first chamber. The second chamber will have a small fuge for pod growth. Then the return pumps. On the far side intake I will be running filter floss, purigen, and carbon in the first chamber. In the second will be the hearer and skimmer. Then the return pumps. The ATO switch is placed in the return pump section.

Driver has came in and now waiting on the other repair parts for the light. I am looking at picking up sand this weekend and might be able to get live rock and start the cycling process if everything works out. Next on my list is a circulation pump. not really needed to cycle, but a must before stocking.

I had a Gen 2 crack

What was the serial number? This tank ran for almost two years before it was broke down and I was under the impression the gen 2 tanks are good.

Well she got wet on 2-6-16 and so it begins. I picked up 20 pounds of sand with a biological activator pouch inside the bag. I also picked up and started the tank with 15 gallons of purified sea water to see if it helps with the cycle. Really had nothing to loose at this point. I also found a guy running a fish store and service company out of his house not to far from me. Picked up fully cured live rock for 3 bucks a pound. Tested the water late last night as well. The water tested good. I am going to let things go till Friday night and test again. Then if all is good add a few parts to the CUC and a frag or a fish.

I also received the new driver and replacement parts from Maxspect. Installed them and the light is back to in new condition.

Aquascape looks really nice!

Thank You

I also found these on a couple of the rocks. It looks to be some type of Paly or Zoa. Since they came out of two different tanks I am guessing they are different. Hope they make it. They are also signs of life on the rock.

This week I had a diatom bloom and added a couple of crabs and snails to help clean up. I have picked up some frags and they are sitting in a holding tank waiting to be added this weekend. Carbon and Purigen will be added today and the fuge should be in place as well. Water change and the frags and take photos. Will post photos of the progress Monday. No fish still for a week or two to let the tank settle in place after adding the frags.

Looks like you are off to a great start. I like the shot of the tank on the stand next to your sofa...It goes well with the room.

Update :

Added the following to the media racks.

Then seeded the tank last week with these guys.

I have some fish and corals in QT right now and should get them transferred over completely tonight. Have been doing them slowly over the last two days.

Moved everything I had in the QT tanks over to the display and here are some current shots of the tank.

Thank You and it is a Green Povona Coral it is a SPS type coral. Very hardy and easy to take care of. At night there are long feeder arms that catch things in the current.

I also feed this to the corals once a week and feed the fish a home made food blend that I do every couple of months.

I recommend not using the pedestal. It creates stress on awkward spots..... I think that's why mine cracked.

I am seeing ones crack with and with out the pedestal. To be honest it has me rethinking keeping this tank vs. up grading to a 60 or 90 gallon cube in the same spot. I also seen a nice 40 gallon cube as well. I am a little worried about keeping it now. The guy that owned it before me used the pedestal and ran the tank for over a year before he upgraded. Just want to try to use as much equipment as I can before changing over.

Weekly update. I felt like the tank could use a little more rock to help with the bio load. So I picked up around 6 more ponds to add to the tank. It seemed to fill it in a little more and give more hiding places for the fish and inverts that are to be added. Here is a pic of the final rock work.

I also contacted IM with my concerns for the tank and here is the response.

Hi Don,

Over the hundreds of thousands of tanks sold, it is never good to hear of these few incidents due to shipping stresses or other pressures that may be placed on a tank to caused such a circumstance.

You are an IM member and if you would like, please send me a picture of the serial number sticker and receipt so I may properly register your tank for you.

We will always do whatever we can to support you with any concerns or questions you may have.

Sincerely,

Brian Hsieh

I do believe after reading more and more of the tank failures that MP10 type power head pulsing or randomly switching back and forth seem to be a common thread. I have also seen a lot of these tanks still running on the web as well. Keeping my fingers crossed for now. Still may look at upgrading to a 60 or 90 gallon cube at a later date. Will see how this one goes.
