Your thoughts

Hey everyone.. Been out of the hobby a few years. Looking to set up my 8 gallon rimless cube. I had the par 30 boost led light but it didn't make it through storage and looks like they went out of business?

Anyways I'm looking around and found this light http://www.ebay.ca/itm/1x-12-LED-Full-Spectrum-E27-Fixture-Aquarium-Coral-Reef-Light-All-water-PAR38-/131680189115?hash=item1ea8c03abb:g:nQ0AAOSwUdlWdR9G

What are your thoughts? Will this be close to hat I had with the boostled bulb? I'm open to suggestions. Not looking to spend a ton.

Thanks!

There are serious warning bells going off in my head based on what I see in that auction. If the pictures and description are of the lamp in question, then they are at odds with each other. Reason I say that is that one of the pictures that shows the face of the lamp while turned off shows the 4 "purple" LEDs having an orangy-pink color to them. That's an immediate sign of a phosphor converted LED, and is most likely pink/magenta (blue LED, red phosphor), which absolutely won't hit the 420nm and 430nm peaks that they are claiming in the text. True violet LEDs in the 400-430nm range will not have any color to them (the dies are silver like blue LEDs are).

Even if the text is right and the pictures are wrong, it would not be my first choice in a PAR38 lamp. Really, it comes down to the dismal quality of the 10K white LEDs. They will have terrible color rendering due to their high color temperature. If a 4000-5000K white was used, then it would be a different story (provided that the "purple" LEDs were actually what they claim).

If you want to take all of the guess work out of this and just get a lamp that will work and look great, then get one of the full spectrum lamps from either Coral Compulsion or Reef LED (both sponsors here at NR). They are more expensive, but there is no guess work.
