texanreefer Posted December 14, 2015 Posted December 14, 2015 I have a heater question for anyone who can help. I currently have a Hydor theo 50w in my spec v and absolutely hate it. It is off by at least 5-6 degrees and can never keep a steady temperature. It is in the highest flow place in my tank. I'm looking at getting a Cobalt aquatics heater, which I should have done from the start. My question is can I get by with a 25w or is a 50w a better choice. Also would you recommend the neotherm or easytherm? Not sure I know the differences but I do know the neotherm costs more. Please help out. Thanks!
jolee0722 Posted December 14, 2015 Posted December 14, 2015 The Neotherm is a lot more accurate than the easytherm. From what I read the easytherm just has the same body. You could probably get by with a 25w but a 50w isn't that much more expensive and better safe than sorry right?
gus6464 Posted December 14, 2015 Posted December 14, 2015 Neotherm but I am not sure if Cobalt fixed their exploding heater issue. They pulled some of them out of the market for a while because the issue was so big. There is also the gold standard which is the Eheim Jager.
Bigchris654 Posted December 14, 2015 Posted December 14, 2015 Have been using the 50watt Neotherm myself in a nuvo 10 with no issues. IMO I would get the 50 over the 25. The ambient temperature in the room the tank is in stays at 70. Has no trouble holding steady at 78.
ReefSafeSolutions Posted December 14, 2015 Posted December 14, 2015 Another solution could be a temperature controller that bypasses the mechanism in your heater that regulates the temperature. We make a controller that does this, you're welcome to PM me for more information if you'd like.
Scorched Posted December 14, 2015 Posted December 14, 2015 The neotherm is the more accurate version. Almost all of the "exploding" heaters were in the 100 or 200 watt versions.

Might have to look at Eheim Jager as well. Can't beat good ole German engineering I suppose. texanreefer Posted December 15, 2015 Author Posted December 15, 2015 Went to the lfs today and they had 1 50w neotherm left so I grabbed it. I'm pretty confident i'll love it based on the reviews i've read. Thanks for the help guys!
