I checked parameters this morning.

Phosphates (Hanna) .11

Calcium (Hanna) 357

All (Hanna) 9.58 dkH

Mag (Nyos) 1380

Nitrates (Red Sea) undetectable

pH (Hanna) 8.10

Calcium seems low. I'm due for a water change today. I should retest to see how much it raises it. Maybe I need to start dosing...?

Do yuo find that he overflow box is loud? I'm using about a 500 gph return and am getting a lot of waterfall sounds due to the durso being 3-4" below the overflow box grates.

Is the noise in the sump or where the water actually runs into the overflow?

My overflow box is silent. It was noisy like a waterfall when I leak tested the tank with fresh water. I was nervous about the sound actually. When I filled it up with saltwater though, the noise went away. It has something to do with surface tension I think.

Bubble tip looks like there is some purple tips on camera but not to my eyes when I actually look at it.

Yeah, the actual overflow box is kind of loud for me. I don't have the cover for it so I'm not sure if that's going to make a huge difference or not.

Welcome back to NR and welcome to Tampa. I'm born and bred. Hope you are enjoying it. Which LFS are you going to. I have three favorites (Creative Aquariums, Marine Warehouse, Sea LIfe), and there is one in Oldsmar I've been meaning to go to but haven't yet. I look forward to following along with your new build. ;)

Thank you. I like it here very much. As far as LFSs go, I like Creative Aquariums, marine warehouse, coral corral, and Fish and other ichy things. They all have amazing live stock and displays. I haven't been to sea life before. Maybe when I get some colonies established we can trade some frags.

Sounds good to me. Ichy things is my sister's favorite. I've yet to go, but plan on it. Sea life is over on St. Pete side. It's a small family place but always has some really cool things.

I changed the t5 bulbs today in favor of a little less blue / violet coloration. Funny that aqua blue and blue plus have a whiter color appearance than two antinic bulbs.

Anyway, open brain seems to like it. It is more puffed up with the brighter light. Zoas are mad, but the palys look good. Goniopora has been pissed off since I brought it home. I've been feeding goniopower and stirring sand bed which was recommended by LFS and it seems to be helping. I don't think it likes the water to be too clean. I've tried different locations to vary flow and light, but it didn't seem to matter. Hammer looks the same and the torch is splitting from a single head to two heads. Yay for signs of growth!

It is difficult to get a picture of the springeri dottyback. It's very agile and loves moving through the smallest openings in the rock.

One of my local fish stores was running a buy on get one free sale on aqua cultured frags so I picked up a purple photosynthetic gorgonian and a chalice. Does the gorgonian get glued to a rock? It's already attached to a piece of rubble rock. Or does it like to sit in the sand?

My zoas stopped opening up a few days ago. With a closer look I noticed something crawling around slowly on them. I think it was a nudibranch. I took the frag out and gave it a dip in revive. I was surprised to see what crawled out. The nudibranch definitely didn't like but also some micro brittle stars. I put them back in the tank, not sure if it was too late for them though. Today zoas are open and happy again.

Parameters were measured this morning.

Calcium 352

Alkalinity 9.912

Phosphate 0.0

Magnesium 1290

Nitrates undetectable

I also siphoned a bunch of detritus from the sump this morning. I ordered some filter floss to see if that catches some of it between first and second chambers. I originally tried filter socks but they were clogged after a few days which is not ideal for me.

If you found a nudi look for eggs as the dip does not usually take them out.

I did find what I think are eggs. I scraped them off with a pair of tweezers. Zoas are happy now and fully open.

I have witnessed a little bit of fish aggression yesterday and today. Usually they all swim together and seem to ignore one another except for the watchman which bolts at any sign of another fish. However the clownfish has chased the dottyback away when getting too close to the anemone which I believe is normal. The coral beauty chased the dottyback away from the little cave region he has claimed. And then today the clown blatantly stole food from the coral beauty at which time the coral beauty nipped at the clown's tail fin. I thought the dottyback was going to be the toughest of the group...

Little bastards, aren't they... :slap: . We got our clowns for my daughter for christmas, one fancy and one black (the teeny ones at creative aquarium. Well, the black has been a real jerk, but this morning, their whole demeanor has changed. I think I can say that they are buddied up now. I hope to see some hosting soon... fingerscrossed

  • 2 weeks later...

I started dosing Red Sea Reef Foundation this week.

Parameters were tested as follows:

1/9/2016

Ca 344

Alk 9.8

Mg 1380

I added 30 mL of calcium, strontium, barium complex A and 40 mL of carbonate and buffer B

1/10/2016

Ca 455

Alk 11.3

Added 24 mL of carbonate and buffer B

1/11/2016

Ca 455

Alk 11.9

Mg 1380

Then I did the 4 day test. Wait 4 days and test again to see what was utilized to figure out the sail amount needed.

1/15/2016

Ca 409

Alk 9.97

My 1350

I added 45 mL of A and 60 mL of B which should bring the parameters up to the target amounts. Now as I understand it I dose the daily amount of 15 mL of B and 11 mL of A and parameters should be relatively stable. I will recheck parameters in a week.

Other changes I made this week I raised the light because I started to see some bleaching in the torch and the open brain corals. Too much light I think. Also I think the water is too clean. I think I need to vary coral foods more. I started using the filter sock again and I put filter floss in second compartment of the sump. Too much detritus is building up down there and it's a pain to clean out. Protein skimmer is working like a champ. Cheato was added to the Refugium section. I used to have a strong pod population but the angelfish made short work of the visible pods and tiny flat worms. He's always prowling and picking at the rocks and walls. Thankfully he doesn't snack on the corals. And one other thing. My clownfish has a nip in one if the find on his belly. It must have the dottyback but I didn't see. Usually the clown is chasing the dottyback but maybe he nipped back. Hopefully the fin heals. Although it doesn't seem to affect his swimming.
