Christianferd
hey guys, new to the forum. New to SW, with a fresh water back ground and 20 years in photography. This is mainly based towards people with photo lighting and printing knowledge, for my personal understanding. Color negative vs. chrome, and print vs. projection. The difference is a color profile breakdown of RGB (red, blue, green) and CYMK (cyan, yellow, magenta and black). My question is: which is more suitable of a scale for LED lights for corals? Or is it completely different. I understand color temp, CRI, LED vs MH, voltage, watts, blah blah blah because it all crosses over with photo. But with the color temperature, it seems It's basically the difference between Cree and bridgelux. Thanks for any input, I'm simply trying to educate myself better before ordering a DIY kit. evilc66
Start here http://www.nano-reef.com/topic/352618-led-colors-and-what-they-are-used-for/ This is stickied at the top of this forum BTW. I think you may be thinking about this too hard, and possibly in the wrong direction. For you, you are coming at it from a color perspective, which we also deal with, but really, it's a secondary focus. The primary focus for lighting is to provide a healthy spectrum for the inhabitants of our tanks. In this case, the light is shifted heavily towards the blue end of the spectrum. Other LED colors are used to help with the color rendition in the corals. Now for color rendition, there are two different ways that corals present colors; fluorescing, and reflective. Different wavelengths of light will produce different fluorescing colors compared to reflected colors. For example, royal blue (455nm) produces killer green fluorescence (other wavelengths will produce green fluorescence too, but it's dependent on the fluorescing proteins in the coral itself), but is terrible at representing green reflected color. So we cut a balance between the different wavelengths to produce a balanced light that shows as many colors properly as possible, while still being healthy for the coral. Link to comment
