Starting Fluval Edge Reef Tank

Hi,

I currently have a Fluval Edge 12 gallon tank being used as a freshwater tank but I want to convert it to a saltwater tank. I've been doing lots of research on the matter and wanted to make sure I'm on the right track. I think to start with I'm going to go for a FOWLR tank so I don't have to upgrade my lighting right away and just keep 1 or 2 fish and a few cleanup crew.

I guess my initial question for you guys is do I need to use the Fluval Edge's current filter which hangs on the back of the tank or can I do away with it altogether as my filtration will be done via the live rock/sand and water changes?

I was also wondering if anyone else on here had converted their Fluval Edge to a reef tank and if so what lighting did they go for?

Thanks in advance,

Craig

The marine pac 3 from saltwater conversion is amazing, but pricey. Should definitely look at it though. For clean up crew, there is this really good video on them by bulk reef supply on youtube that talks a great amount about misconceptions about clean up crews. Should definitely watch, as it makes a lot of good points about actually using smaller clean up crews.

Hi,

Im thinking of doing the same thing.

I won't be using the HOB filter, but thinking of using a canister filter to just hold Purigen or similar just incase I need it. The flow of the Ehiem 2215 canister filter should be strong enough for water flow. As for light, I've actually taken the Fluval Edge cover to my local LFS and found that the AI Prime fits (if the HOB filter is not used). I just have to figure our how to mount it.

This project will start in Feb 2016, looking to do softies and maybe ( a big maybe!) 2x seahorses. I'm still doing a lot of reading.

Hope this helps.

Matt.

Wow i've just had a look at the AI Prime and it looks awesome I think I want one of those now.

Another quick question about the lighting.. What i'd preferably like to do is start by setting up the tank as a FOWLR and then at some point introduce corals. I know before I introduce the corals I will need to upgrade the lighting but wondered if could get away with the fluval edges stock lighting to start the FOWLR.

What do you guys reckon?

I had a Fluval Edge reef tank in the past. You need to at least keep the HOB pump running to oxygenate the water. You could run the back chamber empty, use filter floss, purigen, carbon, or some combination depending on your needs.

I used two par38 bulbs above the tank for reef lighting. For FOWLR, I think you would be fine with the standard light. You can find different color temperature bulbs online(or at least you used to) if you want to change to a bluer/whiter light.

Yes the AI PRIME looks good and apparently works really well.

As for the Fluval Edge stock light for a FOWLR tank - it should be fine as you aren't really getting creatures that need a certain spectrum of light. I dare say though that the stock light is very bland and you'll be itching to replace it. I've attached an image of my Edge that I have in the office. It's only a goldfish tank though – LOL – but it keeps me entertained. This is the 46 litre edge Im looking to convert to a softy /seahorse tank.

Ran my Fluval Edge 12g as a FOWLR for almost 2 years. Now it's a reef full of corals with a nano box light doing very well.

Here's a pic after about a year as a FOWLR... stock lighting + 3 ecoxotic LED light strips. FOWLR for the Edge II is a good choice.
