Hey guys,

Looking to build my first nano reef and I've decided on a 10gal. I plan on using live rock / sand and performing water changes as the primary filtration method. Here is what i'm thinking about buying to get started, am I too far off base?

  • 10 Gallon Aquarium
  • Maxspect Nano Razor 15,000K LED Light Fixture - 70 Watt - $289.99
  • EHEIM Jager Aquarium Thermostat Heater 50 Watt - $21.46
  • 2 X Hydor Koralia Nano Aquarium Circulation Pump, 240gph - $18.74
  • Hydor Smart Wave Circulation Pump Controller - $57.77
  • 12lbs live rock / 10 lbs live sand

I'm planning on a few softies (maybe 3 max), 2 Ocellaris Clowns and a firefish + clean up crew.

Thoughts? too much livestock?

Good advice, what would you use for filter media?

Yea, I know, I'm a Noob, thanks for the assist. For the record, nothing is getting build for a month or two, I'm just trying to get a materials list and a game plan together before Black Friday :)

You know, I recommend the Nuvo 10 or 20. They start at $100, are beautiful, glass, and have all the filtration built in.

It's fantastic to have filtration incorporated into the aquarium- nothing has to hang out. It's easy to just pull out the media basket to replace the filter floss or carbon. Some say its not as pretty as a sump, but its much less complicated and no water has to go under the stand.

Rimless and sexy as well

Here's the 10, which is a cube design http://m.marinedepot.com/products/0i10457/innovative-marine-10-gallon-nuvo-fusion-nano-aquarium

And here is the 20, which is a really beautiful long tank

Filter media varies based on your tanks parameters, but the most popular things to put in the media basket would be filter floss on top, and chemical filtration like Chemipure Elite/Blue and maybe some sort of phosphate remover like PhosGuard or Phosban, on the bottom. Not sure I would use a phosphate remover until you test for it and find you have a problem. If you add more than you need there can be bad consequences.

A lot of it is personal preference. Some people swear by certain things because it works for them, but doesn't mean it would work for you.

I am liking the Nuvo 20, that fits my location like a glove, doesn't hurt to double the size either. I think you've convinced me!

Thanks for the advice on the fitler media, i'll plan on floss and the chemipure elite to start with.

You've been a great help.

Congratulations! Nuvo 20 is awesome!

Yeah doubling the size doubles the stability for sure

On Black Friday I bet you can get 20% off as well, just a hunch.

No problem, always a pleasure helping people get into the hobby :)

Oh and welcome to NR

If you go with a nuvo 20, I would invest in a RW-4 pump. They run around $50.

Since the nuvo is rimless, I would advise to stay away from fish that are known jumpers.

Popular lights are Reef-breeders, Nano-box and Razor.

Otherwise you will need things like a refractometer, test kits, and a source for RODI.

Popular filtration is purigen, carbon, and filterfloss.

Welcome to nano-reef btw :)

Thanks! Any particular reason I should look into the pump upgrade?

Mostly power and noise.

The Hydor Koralia Nano do not move enough water imo for a Nuvo 20. I had some and was not impressed at all. The RW-4 is adjustable and controllable so you can pick the best setting/flow that works for your tank/rockscape.
