ReefSafeSolutions
Hey gang, Traded in my evil, coral-eating clownfish for this little guy today. The local fish store was pretty cool about everything and doing the swap was very nice of them. This is the replacement. Real small fish, pretty stressed right now and just staying in the corners of the tank. The other clown is hovering around the new one, but not really attacking it at all (yet). I'm sure tomorrow will be a better day for the new clown: The little guy has a few dark gray spots on him, as you can see in the pictures. From what I've read, it's nothing to be worried about. Probably just stings from corals in the tank it was previously in, but wanted to get a second opinion. Think he looks OK? Link to comment
Bingo1213
From the pic I think he does. His fins are in good shape which is a good sign. Link to comment
ReefSafeSolutions
I'm not sure what's going on with this fish...he seemed to be swimming around just fine at the fish store. Went into hiding as soon as I dropped him in my tank, and has been hiding for about 24 hours now. Gets really deep under a cave (that I really need to block so I don't find dead fish under there) and just exists down there. I fished him out from under the rock and put him in a little quarantine net/basket that hangs on the edge of the tank so I can observe the fish. He just swims around really slow and opens and closes his mouth very fast. Won't eat. I think I may have gotten a dud! I did the same acclimation I always do...pour out a bit of water, temp acclimate in the tank and add a cup or two of tank water to the bag. After about 15 minutes I dropped the fish in the tank (no bag water added). Maybe I did it too fast, but I'm thinking since it's such a small fish, it just didn't handle the move very well. Hopefully it survives... Link to comment
HarryPotter
I don't know anything about fish sickness or diseases, but the grey spots don't seem like something a healthy fish would have? Link to comment
ReefSafeSolutions
I did a bit more research and came across this website, that indicates the gray spots are probably nothing to worry about: http://www.wetwebmedia.com/clnfshdisart.htm (I hate picking fish out of the fish store...they never seem to grab the right one...) Murphs_Reef
I don't know anything about fish sickness or diseases, but the grey spots don't seem like something a healthy fish would have? My female has slightly darker spots on her back. It seems ok Link to comment
Hexadron
If he was hosting in a soft coral or anything other than an anemone, they can develop darker spots. Perfectly normal. Link to comment
ReefSafeSolutions
Assuming this fish survives, I won't worry about the dark spots. I wish there was something I could do to help this little guy out, I feel bad for him! Just sits in one spot, not really swimming around or anything. (The observation net is pretty good sized, certainly enough room for the fish to move about) Link to comment
ReefSafeSolutions
Well...that's the last time I request the smallest clownfish (or any fish)...poor guy died tonight. I feel bad for the little guy, I don't know if it was sick or if it just couldn't handle the move, but at least it doesn't have to suffer anymore. I'll be working with a single clown from here on out. Next fish will probably be a bicolor dottyback. But certainly not the smallest one they have. Thanks for all the help everyone! Link to comment
HarryPotter
Sorry for your loss Might have been the runt of the batch Link to comment
ReefSafeSolutions
Sorry for your loss Might have been the runt of the batch I think it was the runt...it was VERY small. I think it had a hard time swimming in the current and it was probably just so stressed it couldn't handle it. I guess that's what I get for messing with the tank too much! Link to comment

Baby clowns struggle with the high flow of a reef tank. They can be acclimated to it but if they have never been in it that could be the tipping point for a fish going through the stress of moving into a new environment. It sounds like it could have been your culprit. I learned that the hard way also. Sorry for your loss. Link to comment
