HarryPotter
Can I put some of my beach collected shells into my reef tank? They are very pretty and would be nice new homes for my red leg hermits Link to comment
najluni15
I've done it and never had a problem Link to comment
Addinali
Yes just let them fully dry to kill any possible pest or algae. Link to comment

My dad said I should boil them to make sure they don't smell, but does that really matter if they're going into my tank? I've done it and never had a problem Your hermits go into them? nanoreefer15
Nice idea, I'll probably try the same thing once I finally setup my tank. You'd probably need to sterilize it somehow first, like boiling it maybe? Not sure though Link to comment

Hig789
Harry you need to go out to the beach and get you some of the cerith snails at night. If I had known what they were when we were invdestin I would have brought some home. Link to comment

Not sure I would want to introduce "Nature"- parasites, etc. I like my sterile system haha Theres TONs of all sized purple urchins crawling around the surf and washed ashore. Thats pretty cool haha Link to comment
najluni15
Yeah you can boil them first. I had hermits in nice shells that I found here in california. The tropical hermits in my tank must have felt like they were living in some exotic mansion in shells they've never seen before! Link to comment

Snails in the wild have strange algae, bacteria, parasites, etc. Im not sure I would be willing to introduce that into my tank to save a few bucks Link to comment
markalot
I've bought polished shells off Ebay when I had my thin striped hermits. Best dressed hermits in the hobby. Link to comment

I would say most of everyone buy their cuc from John, and I'm pretty sure they are all collected. I could be wrong on that though. Link to comment
