Starting nano tank, had questions

I'm currently ordering and planning on setting up a Nuvo Fusion 10.

Equipment list so far:

Tank: Nuvo Fusion 10

Light: AI Prime light

Powerhead: Jebao Rw-4 with 12v supply instead of 24v

ATO: Tunze 3152 Nano

Stand: Storage Cube organiser in my room

Misc: upgrading pump (suggestions?) and inTank basket.

It's going to be a LPS/softy tank since my main tank is mostly SPS.

Now for the questions:

1. Is the ghost Skimmer worth getting for The tank this size? Or will weekly water changes be fine?

2. Is a controller needed or is the temperature control on the Cobalt Neo-Therm accurate and reliable enough?

No need to upgrade the stock pump if you run a power head. It pushes plenty through the media.

IMO no need for a skimmer if you keep up on water changes. I'm running the same tank and have not seen a use for one.

The neotherm is very accurate and you don't need a controller for it.

The intank basket is a must!

Great start by the way! I'm running almost all the same equipment and could not be happier.

Yea, I was debating going with a Kessil A160 initially but I like the idea of the AI Prime. All the colors are fully controllable and no need for a separate controller for it. and I managed to find a place that had the black one in stock (only 1 left mind you) and I jumped on it.

I've heard some horror stories about the Neo-Therm heaters failing to turn on/off, exploding, leaking voltage.

On a side note though, It and the tank are getting here before most of the other stuff. So I will be spending some time measuring it and the tank and using my laser cutter to make a Clear Acrylic mount for the Light since I've heard such crappy things about its mounting kit.

Where? Lol I have used them since they came out in like 6 different tanks. Perfect temperature, and the Apex Controller NEVER has to step in.

Recently, for the first time I tried a different brand. I used a JBJ Titanium heater w. controller, and it nuked my tank to 90*. Not fun. I would say DEFINITELY get NeoTherm, and if you are worried get an Apex JR.

BRS Mainly, Every other place has mostly positive reviews with the occasional negative. But at BRS it has roughly a 3.25 star rating.

Take reviews with a grain of salt. Do more people that love them take the effort to go to the site and review it, or the (rare) people that have an issue.

Lets say 100 people get the heater, 2 don't like it. It still could end up with a 2.5 star rating, because the two that don't like it review it, and its rare for those who enjoy it to.

Yea, Ill probably end up getting the 50 or the 75 W model and then a bit down the line probably an Apex Jr to watch it if it sticks on or email me if it fails and temp drops. I currently have used Jagers in all of my previous tanks, and while they're nice their temperature swing can be pretty wide, but I use Apex to control it anyhow.

i think the problem with the neo therm seems to be from the 150 watt + units

Yea, from the reviews I looked at, it only seemed like people complained about the high watt ones, that's why I wasn't too worried about it.

Yeah I am just unhappy with the larger heaters as well.

Neo-Therm does not have enough wattage for my 300 gallon, so I went with the JBJ Titanium 1000w. Big mistake!

Yea, When I do my main tanks I always double up on the heaters. On my 40 gallon I have 2x 125W heaters.. Hella overkill I know, but I have redundancy if one fails and they're both controlled by Apex anyhow.

Also, what would you use for a Fuge light on this tank? I wanted one of the submersible lights from inTank but they're out of stock and the similar ones on eBay are 2x the price. And I don't really wanna go with another magnet light on the 10g, Want something small and inconspicuous

All issues with the prime mount can be fixed with less than a dollar of parts from Home Depot. Let me know if you want the details

Get a pico skim 2.0 if you want a skimmer for that tank it's perfect and pretty cheap if you get it off the forums, I bought mine for $45 shipped

What's the info on that? May decide to get it, will have to see once I get the light and tank in

i was thinking about going with the submersible for a fuge then someone pointed out to me that it will spike the tank's temp dramatically while it's on.

Got most of the stuff ordered.. Still torn between getting an Apex for this tank or not.

My big dilemma is the fact that If I get the Apex JR and decide to upgrade/upsize this tank down the road, I'll be wishing I spent the extra on the full apex. But is it really worth it to spend $525 on a controller for a 10 gallon tank....

How likely are you to upgrade? Problem is with the JR you just get more and more modules, and it sucks. Salinity, PH, BreakOut, WXM, etc. Much easier to bite the bullet now IMO- I regretted the JR with the NanoCube

Oh, I plan on upgrading to a 180g one day.. but the question is, would I tear down the 10g, the 40g, or just have a 3rd tank.. lol

My best guess:

The 40g would become a quarantine, and the 180g the display.

At that point the 10g would become a display refugium (just for fun)

Either way I would go to the full apex. Its cheaper in the long run- the JR is more expensive if you want to get even CLOSE to the features of the full.

Weeell.. Couldnt get my hands on the 10 gallon for a few more weeks.. So I ended up ordering another Prime light and switching to the 20 gallon..

Oh well more room for fish and CORAL
