In the last few years, All-In-One aquariums have begun to flood both the beginners and advanced reefing sector of the market. Characterized as having filtration integrated into the aquarium, All-In-One (AIO) aquariums are epitomized by the popular Innovative Marine Nuvo, JBJ NanoCube, and the Biocube.

However, these aquariums, particularly my JBJ RL-45, include a severe filtration issue. The supplied "Media Basket" is grossly inefficient, allowing over half of the water (And unwanted waste) to avoid filtration.

InTank LLC offers a solution to this problem, offering high quality media baskets that use 100% of the aquariums potential. In this review, I will be comparing the stock JBJ RL-45 media baskets with the aftermarket ones sold by InTank LLC.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I ordered two Rimless Nano Cube 45 Media Baskets and one Innovative Marine 30 & 38 Fuge Basket. I was told that this "Fuge Basket" (The Refugium basket, in which macro algae is placed) would fit the RL-45 despite its title. At the same time I also order poly filter, as Intank LLC offers it for the cheapest price around.

Shipping:

After a bit of a wait (Due to Memorial Day), I was excited to see that my package finally arrived.

IMG_0678_zpsdjpkuev9.jpg

The acrylic baskets were protected quite cleverly, using multiple layers of redundancy. The Poly-Filter was placed on the edges of the box, followed by a significant amount of bubble wrap and foam cloth.

IMG_0679_zpsobajwui9.jpg

The contents were also arranged quite snugly, cleverly boxed to prevent movement within.

IMG_0681_zpstu5fivkc.jpg

The Acrylic Baskets were also in their own boxes, once again wrapped in foam to prevent damage.

IMG_0685_zpsibaz9niz.jpg

I pity the landfill! Kidding, I recycle!

IMG_0731_zpsjg1b5inb.jpg

Initial Impressions of Quality:

Wow. Truthfully, this was my initial impression of the InTank media basket. The acrylic is spotless, and the joints are unbelievably clean and precise- like I've never seen before.

The twins:

IMG_0694_zpst4w519fi.jpg

For example, check out the unbelievable cutout of the water distributers. Remarkable! The center piece can be slid in or out at will, allowing the owner to custom design how he would like to set up the filtration media.

IMG_0692_zpsngpr6lvc.jpg

The acrylic slides out to allow access to the media, and to adjust the layout

IMG_0689_zpsctb96xoj.jpg

Comparing to the JBJ Media Basket (Included with aquarium):

The difference is day and night, both in the workmanship and the performance of the media baskets.

The InTank Media Basket is over double the size of the included basket, and forces 100% of the water to go through the filtration. Instead of explaining it to you, I will include some comparison pictures of the stock vs. Intank baskets. The difference is obvious!

InTank basket (Left) next to JBJ basket (Right)

IMG_0707_zpsxdo5mkzx.jpg

This view allows one to see how much larger the InTank version is.

IMG_0706_zpsbooqupei.jpg

Just an impressive piece of equipment!

IMG_0712_zpsewb5yxl0.jpg

Performance- InTank vs. JBJ

I knew from the start that the JBJ Media Basket was mediocre at best. Half the water goes over the basket and back into the aquarium, cutting your filtration (And potential stocking) by more than half. The Intank basket utilizes the entire potential, down to the 1/4 cm. The Intank media basket also will not move, unlike the JBJ.

Here you can see how small the JBJ basket is

IMG_0702_zpsmsrte8n9.jpg

And if it is slightly moved (Even by water!), one ends up with zero filtration.

IMG_0723_zpsx5muzry8.jpg

Now see the tight fit of the InTank media basket- unbelievable! I would like to see some water even TRY to avoid the poly-filter goodness!

IMG_0722_zpstb9qqexp.jpg

Now thats some filtration!

IMG_0720_zpsts36hud0.jpg

Now thats some filtration! (Pardon the tubing, I was acclimating some livestock at the time)

IMG_0732_zpszifmw0qp.jpg

The refugium basket, as advertised, fit snugly into the compartment directly next to the main filtration basket. Once again, the quality is remarkable and the fit perfect. I look forward to the Macro!

IMG_0728_zpsekg7yqof.jpg

Overall, buying the InTank Media Basket was a choice I will not regret. Now I can include more media, have double the filtration, and not fret about the stock media basket (Which breaks, moves, etc). I will update this review with long-term results and benefits as I go.

Please feel free to ask any questions or make any comments here!

Note: I do not work for or receive any benefit from InTank LLC by making this review. The full retail price was paid for the tested equipment.

I don't think it matters but I put blue side up sense it was more coarse

I heard that white goes up and blue down because the blue is finer, so gets the tiny particles that the white misses. I dunno though, probably doesn't matter?

Firstly, that was NOT how you spell quarantine.

Secondly, congrats on the equipment! Looks shmancy.

Thirdly, quit whining about having to get up early. I'm up at 5, at work by 6, and leave at 4.

Then again, I do get seasonal paid unemployment starting this time next week through July.... but.... shh.

I'm glad that you got the cobalt ones. I made the mistake to get the marine land one, and it can get noisy!

yeah I originally bought the marine land one and it sucked! Now I just use it for water changes lol

The flow in the tank is getting REALLY high. I recently increased the MP40w QD to 40%!

Tank is really clean now, I think the mini-cycle (from the new live sand) is done. There are no more diatoms, parameters are great, and overall corals look great.

The green slimer is the only one not doing well- it has barely any PE. I think that is due to rapidly raising the Ca and Alk. It's not bleaching, but barely has any PE.

In other news, the InTank media baskets are awesome! I love the Poly-Filter as well, and changed them out this morning (yeah after 12 hours lol) because they were filthy!

I have so much media space that I was/am considering if the BRS reactor is neccesary!

Thanks! Luckily I might have to do the same- I have a JBJ PSK-45 skimmer on the way, that I believe takes up one of the two fuge compartments. I will have to move the heater and reactor outlet return to the center compartment, but believe it me will work!

Now, if I will have enough detritus/nutrients for chaeto after my skimming, dual InTank baskets, and BRS reactor (for 100+ gallons), that remains to be seen!
