Coral Compulsion gooseneck build quality?

Partially Submerged

I am considering getting two of these, but for $50 a pop, I'd like to make sure they are good. There are some reports about the clamp breaking (not just about CC), which worries me a bit since the bulb would almost certainly land in the water.

Those who use the goosenecks, could you comment on the quality/durability? And if someone has both CC goosenecks and Kessil ones, could you comment on how they compare? Thanks a lot!

I have one of these on order from them right now. I will report back as soon as it arrives. They say under the product description:

  • Black ALUMINUM mounting clamp with 3 nylon thumb screws (fits aquarium rims up to 1.5")
  • Not the cheap version everyone else has that breaks on them. Our fixtures are made right here in the USA!

This leads me to believe that these are not the ones that were snapping off. Well, hopefully that's the case for me :D

I had 2 of the older "Acrylic based" CC goosenecks. One broke at the mount and the other was fine but i hear their fixtures are aluminum now.

When the one broke, it luckily fell across and not into the tank (only because it was a small tank 6 gal).

Thanks, guys! It would be great if the whole fixture were aluminum now. I thought that was just the upper body. I am going to ask in the CC subforum.

Oh, you're right! The website actually states that the clamp is aluminum now. Just ordered two. Thanks!

Just got my fixture today. The clamp is indeed aluminum, and the fixture is really robust. They mean it when they say you shouldn't try to adjust the gooseneck with it attached to the tank.. there is a significant amount of resistance when bending. The only thing design wise that I would change is putting some rubber feet on the ends of the clamp screws, as they are just plain hard plastic with nothing to cushion them against the glass. There is also no On/Off switch on the fixture near the bulb socket like most other version of this - I think most people use timers so this isn't really a big deal.. but if you were expecting it, it could be a bummer.

Here are a couple of pics on my 10g tank that is cycling.

Coverage from their PAR30 (18K Vibrance) is impressive too. I was planning on using this for a 12" cube, but it covers this 10g really well.

Thanks for the review, and nice tank! Mine arrived today as well, and I agree with your comments. I am very pleased with the quality. I have to admit that I hated spending $50 on a gooseneck clamp, but these are really nice. I'll post some pictures when the tank is up and running later this weekend.
