Jaysan
Alright, So I have a durso setup on a new tank build I'm doing. However, since this tank is in the living room, the sump noise is more than I can handle... Has anyone had this setup and had a quite sump? Here is a picture of the bottom. The top has no noise at all Just struggling with the bottom. I added a wye connector after the gate valve to allow the air to go up and the water to flow down to alleviate the burping in the sump. I'm getting water noise from the water hitting the wye connector and then the extra air bubbles If nothing can be done, I was thinking of changing this setup from a Durso to a Herbie. I have a 1" and 0.5" bulkhead. Can a herbie be setup with these two bulkheads? My setup is a 50 gallon with a 350-380gph pump Thanks for your help! Link to comment
C00kieduster
My only experience is with herbie. So Im no help as to alleviating your current issue. Typically a herbie will have a main drain line, and a back up incase of a clog. Most have three bulkheads. Main, backup, and return. Going without a backup is pretty risky. Link to comment

Hey, yeah, Im trying to fix this durso to make it quite if I can, but if I cant, I will use the two bulkheads as the main and emergency and run an outside line as my return (no bulkheads) Link to comment
Bill Nye
I could never silence the durso that came with my reef ready tank so I went with a herbie set up. If you don't want to drill anymore holes you can use the .5 inch drain as your main drain and the 1 inch as your emergency drain then run the return over the back of the tank. My tank had a 1 inch and 3/4 inch holes cut into it so I used the 3/4 inch one as my main drain and use a spears gate valve to adjust the flow. Link to comment
Sancho
What is your return pump rated at? Are you using any sort of valve to regulate the amount of air the drain will take in? Do you have a upsidedown durso in the sump?If not you you should add a upsidedown durso about 2 inches under water line in the sump. Link to comment

Return pump is rated at 350-380GPH I'm not currently using any valves to regulate the amount of air the drain will take in. I just drilled a hole on the cap on the top Durso in the overflow. I've read on a few forums that people drilled larger holes, and put a tube in there with a valve to adjust the amount of air? I originally thought this was just to quiet the overflow area. My overflow is actually very quite. I'm getting the noise all in the drain plumbing below the tank. I added what some people used as the "reverse" durso. where a wye connector is used as seen in the picture. The wye connector is coming after the gate valve. I am going to pick up a few more parts tomorrow and try the other method with the train tube going directly into the sump and its a 90Degree elbow to a T. I'm going to go from 1" to 1.5" from the 90 and hope this might help me solve the water splashing issue. If you have any other suggestions, i'm all ears! I am actually contemplating on just changing this setup into a Herbie but I thought I would keep trying this durso until I really cannot get rid of the noise. How much flow can a 0.5" drain take? I've read it can take upwards from 250GPH to 1200GPH? I'm not sure what a 0.5" drain can drain under full siphon...If you know, that would be great! Link to comment
Bill Nye
I'm not exactly sure but at full siphon definitely more than your return. I use a mag 5 as my return and I need to close my drain alot so it can keep up. Link to comment
HM3105
I have a tank that came with a Durso and I didn't like it very much. I plugged the air hole, attached a gate valve and went for the full siphon option. Its dead silent. the only noise I have is from the return pump because its agitating the surface of the water. I need to point out, I have an emergency drain set up just above the waterline so that in case I lose siphon or if it gets clogged the tank doesn't overflow. My return pump is similar sized to yours and the tank is a 50 gallons also. Both of my drains are 1" but I actually used a reducer to drop the siphon down to 1/2" and STILL had to use the gate valve to adjust it, a full siphon moves ALOT of water. Link to comment
