Martin in China
What would be the best way to go for? Sand (substrate) in from day one or rather leave the sand out until the tank is cycled. In Holland it seems that they like to leave the sand out until fully cycled, but most Australian and American websites (and YouTube) seem to advertise to get your sand in. What are your opinions on this? Link to comment

gulfsurfer101
You'll experience more diatomes longer than necessary by waiting. When I have so start up a tank, I'll fill it 3/4 of the entire system then just drop my rinsed sand right in and toss in the rock and fill up the rest if I have to ands start it up. The water clears pretty quick to crystal clear overnight. I've added sand to a bb tank I got tired of looking at with no sand and ended up dealing with diatomes to small amounts of red slime algae. dillct
Depends on how clean your live rock is. If a bit on the dirty side, I'd wait until adding the sand. Link to comment
