heu guys, my first post here so please be kind ;)

I have a resun dms 500pl. I bought it second hand and tbh it's always been quite a state. The lid is pretty much help together with cable ties and th wires are plugged direct to the mains. Meaning I have to unplug one light and put another on.

Also when I got it, it had some wool type stuff and some stoney stuff. From the manual I found on the net, it was set up completely wrong. I had to remove the lot and clean the back and put it in what I think is the right order.

I don't have a heater so my coldwster fish are in there, but the pump failed a while ago and due to not having money to buy a replacement the glass is now green. I've had a smaller filter from a smaller tank which seemed to help for a while but it clogs up fast with a tank this size. My first question is, where can I pick up a replacement filter media set? Or what can I use to get the best result? Also, I was thinking of a more powerful pump but I have no idea where to start and obviously money is an issue too but I don't want the fish to die. And finally what are the two holes on the right hand side for? They are both just holes now after I had to spend hours picking some kind of filler from the bottom one.

Thanks all and sorry if it's an essay :)

What kind of fish? What is your goal for the Tank? You can likely use filter floss or pads from a LFS. The bio balls or ceramic balls most people don't use. This a saltwater tank I assume?

I just have cold water fish, nothing added. The main goal would be marine but since they are a load of work then I would say tropical as my kids love looking at the tank. What is LFS?

LFS is local fish store. when you say cold water fish - what are you keeping in there? if you are looking to keep freshwater fish i'd probably ditch everything but the filter and use filter floss or filter pads and seachem purigen.

i'd also suggest browsing http://www.fishlore.com/Beginners.htmto get an idea of what you can use to get the job done as well as tips, parameters, etc.
