Azedenkae
So there are some nodular growth on my macroalgae, which I am rather confused about. Just wondering if anyone has any ideas: And the original for comparison: I really have no idea what they are. The tank is currently cycling. I found these washed up on the beach, so I tossed them into the tank. Further details on my tank and tank parameters so far are here. Essentially there's been quite a lot of spikes in nutrients I am sure, as I have been excessively adding pureed seafood to my aquarium as part of the cycle. Link to comment
amphipod
They are naturally occurring growths on the stem I see clearish areas on the algae, are they mushy? Link to comment
Azedenkae
They are naturally occurring growths on the stem I see clearish areas on the algae, are they mushy? Cool. What are they though? I mean, what do they do? The clearish areas are now hollow (the algae must have died inside, leaving just the epidermis or whatever it is. Some green algae has colonized the inside of the tubes. >.< Link to comment
amphipod
If only I know their function, sorry I don't know the purpose, I just know it doesn't hurt the algae and is normal in some species. Let's hope someone who knows will comment what the nodules are good for. Also lol that green can be desperate, I hope your macro doesn't die any more. Link to comment
Azedenkae
Lol, I hope so too. As in someone coming in and telling me the function. I'm really curious. I'm hypothesizing that they may be new growths - as in forming new branches, but it is a simple guess. There were originally more red, but it receded quite a bit over the first few days. That also broke up the macro into a billion pieces that now float all over the tank. But the recession has abided, and now there are the growth. Eh dunno. >_> I'll keep posting updates and hoping for answers, but until then, will just keep observing it. Link to comment
amphipod
My macro broke up a bit also, but now its seemingly working well. Maybe it's their response to shipment? Also member William Halligan has had issues with red macro, but unfortunately his went all the way dead. Hope they are branches going for more growth for you. Link to comment
Azedenkae
Hopefully. I picked mine up from the beach so no surprises that they are half dead lol. Also temperatures are crazy atm. My tank is sitting on 28-30 degrees. Luckily I am still cycling. XD Link to comment
ndrobey
Those nodules are air bladders. They keep the macro upright, growing towards the surface. Link to comment

They keep the macro upright, growing towards the surface. I didn't know reds made air bladders, I know brown macros, but not reds. You learn something new daily I guess. Some of my red macros grow upright without the bladders, why the difference? Link to comment
farkwar
Evolution. Why does a platypus, a mammal, lay eggs and can poison you? http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Platypus Link to comment
ndrobey
There are a number of species of red algae, with different growth strategies. Those in shallower water don't need air bladders to find the surface. Those that grow in deeper water do. Link to comment
Azedenkae
Ahhhhh okay. That's cool. Wait so would that indicate that these want to be higher up in the tank? Link to comment
ndrobey
You put it on the bottom, and it will grow up from there. Link to comment
Azedenkae
Mmk. Anyways thanks for all that. Link to comment
