Wjcastiglione
so, my tanks been up and running for about 4 months now - CUC has been in it for about 3 months - nothing much has changed recently - I added a blood red fire shrimp - however, it seems that my hermits in the past week have just been going crazy on snails - 2 or 3 of them have bit the dust. any idea whats going on? itzju
hermits are probably looking for bigger shells to move into. try getting some empty shells that are bigger than what they have now. Link to comment
Benny314
What sort of hermits? Some are more murderous than others. I've read blue legs have a habit of killing snails for the hell of it/dinner. I have dwarf blues and have never had much luck with any snails other than nassarius who seem to breed like crazy in my system (started with 3 and have hundreds now). Mind you the nassarius are tiny and of no shell benefit for the hermits as well as living under the sand. I'm not sure if my other snails were just dying and being cleaned up or murdered one by one by the hermits. The hermits never seem to adopt their shells. I picked up a very large electric blue hermit the other week, he's really cool, but going to be sumped once my lighting is sorted and my conch moved into the main tank. Currently the conch is in the sump where there's algae growing around my corals and frags for him to graze on, I did put him in the main tank the other day until I found the electric blue cuddling him in an unfriendly looking way. As cool as the big electric blue is, the conch is cooler for the main tank. There's no reason other than dinner plans for the electric blue to go for the conch either as the conch shell is far to small for the big hermit. Link to comment
Wjcastiglione
there's empty shells all over the tank! one of my clowns is hovering above one of the hermits constantly - almost like they're fighting over food? I feed these things pretty much every day - how could they be so hungry? Link to comment
jamescstein
That is why my cube will have no hermits in it. I've watched the same thing happen in my wifes tank. A hermit will get ahold of a snail and then next time you look, all the hermits in the tank are on it. Link to comment
