Islandoftiki
So, let's see. We've been busy to say the least. Much has been happening, so here are some pictures and videos: Janet is doing well, she just went through another molt. One of our banana plants decided to make fruit! Geronimo has decided that he loves apples now. We planted a lime tree. and an avocado (we'll be planting two more) and a mango and a couple of these fox tail palms another passion fruit vine (This is a purple variety) We planted hibiscus that are blooming now This is a longan tree -- it's in the same family and tastes similar to lychee. Here's one of the front walkway planting beds that I just finished Our succulents are doing amazing. Samson would like you to throw the frisbee, please. As some of you may or may not know, Spam is a staple food group among many here in Hawaii. So, they had this at costco the other day. I guess someone asked the question, "How can we make Spam more disgusting?" and they answered with this: These crazy moths showed up all around the place at night a couple weeks ago. Their eyes are very reflective and you can see them looking back at your very soul when you shine the flashlight on them. They looked like sparkling little gems on the ground at first. The other day I was trying to figure out what these odd little indentations in the soil of our front planting bed were. It turns out that the toads make them and hang out in them at night because it's moist. Hang tight... more to come! 10 Quote Link to comment
Sancho
So nice seriously you're living the dream. Now I am craving a spam, egg and cheese samich 2 Quote Link to comment
Islandoftiki
Here's a baby coconut palm I planted The head gasket finally gave up on my Saab a couple weeks ago, so that gave me a little project to do. Not a difficult job, I've probably done over a hundred in my time at the Saab dealer. The chickens have been extremely productive. We always have a minimum of two or three dozen eggs on hand at any given time. We get five to seven eggs every day. We hiked down into the Pololu valley a while back. It's very beautiful. Samson likes to help with the chores around the house. In this case, he follows me around and stands in front of where I'm trying to vacuum next The long commute still doesn't suck My best friend came to visit us for a week and we went out kayaking one day. At one point, we were surrounded by humpback whales no more than 100 feet away from our kayaks and two of them swam directly under our kayaks! The view never gets old. Geronimo on the far hill Geronimo coming for his daily carrots and apples Geronimo playing with a pot that blew over the fence in a windstorm You would think chickens would be fazed by 55mph winds, but they aren't. A good friend of ours brought his drone over and we did a video flyby of our house. Pretty awesome. These guys are all around the compost bin at night Ok, this one is a lot of fun. I took Pamela's Wonder Woman "Invisible Jet" Mini Cooper S up to Old Saddle Road and filmed the drive. So, please sit back an enjoy this relaxing and leisurely... wait, no. Hold onto your hats folks because I sped this video up six times the normal speed! You might want to fasten your seatbelts because the road gets a little bumpy toward the end. Wheeeeee! 9 Quote Link to comment

FlowerMama
Geronimo made me smile, he seems to be a ham. Love the pseudo roller coaster ride. I love all the planting you've done; it'll be incredible when they've filled in. You'll never be without omelets, or crepes, or chopped up egg for oriental, or...that's wonderful. 1 Quote Link to comment
Islandoftiki
Well, will you look what came in the mail today... An inexpensive Chinese copy of a GoPro camera! Well, it's supposed to be the best of the GoPro copies. My old underwater camera died from salt water exposure, so it'll be nice to have something to make new videos for you all! I'm hoping to get a little time this weekend to do some tide-pooling or kayaking with this thing to see how well it works. Stay tuned! I'm excited! 4 Quote Link to comment
Islandoftiki
Look what comes inside! Lots and lots of different adapters and mounts! How fun! And this thing comes with three batteries! Awesome. I threw a spare 32 gig card in it for now. Well see if that's big enough for what I'm going to be doing. I want to figure out a way to mount it under the kayak to video what's going on under the surface of the water while we're paddling around. 5 Quote Link to comment
FlowerMama
Wait a minute, how the hell did they get all of that stuff in THAT box? Next vaca I go on that needs a suitcase, I'm employing a chinese person to pack for me. I can't wait to see what you get. 1 Quote Link to comment

Islandoftiki
Ok, I gave up and started a new photobucket account. Here's a sneak peek! We now have goats! This is Syria. I built the goat shed in the background and the play stand that she's standing on. And her best friend, Cherry. Geronimo poses with his new exercise ball. Our dragon fruit just recently flowered! Our view: I've been playing with a new Raspberry Pi. Could this be a new aquarium controller? Our bananas are producing! This is our second harvest! 10 Quote Link to comment

FlowerMama
Dragon fruit, is that the one that only blooms once a year, one night? Like one bloom a year? I noticed the leaf shape & think it's the same that my mom has. She has actually given some to friends because it propogates easily and they've called her at 3am to say it's blooming! 2 Quote Link to comment

Islandoftiki
Aloha Nano-Reef friends! Well, if there's one thing I'm missing here in paradise, it's time. Man, it's been a crazy ride so far. We're slowly getting our lives set up here. It's a very different experience from the mainland. It takes some getting used to. Gone are the days of Amazon prime two-day delivery. At least we can still get free shipping, but it's 7-10 days now... and anything that's large or heavy, you can probably forget it... it doesn't ship here. I can't even order oil filters for my car. They don't ship here... not even if I wanted to pay for shipping. It's not an option. Anyhow, that's just one of the things you have to make adjustments for. Another is that you probably can't just go to the local sporting goods, electronics, or specialty store to buy what you want. If they don't carry what you want at Safeway, Walmart, Target or K-Mart, you're out of luck, and none of these stores are the big "Super" stores that you often find on the mainland, so their selections are often limited and mostly geared toward tourists. People are flaky as hell. If they say they're going to do something, don't count on it. At least not any time soon. This is especially true for businesses. If you want something done in a timely manner, you had better be self sufficient or know the right people. Anyhow, just so you don't all think living in Hawaii is a permanent vacation. It isn't. It has it's perks though. And to make matters worse, the one LFS went out of business when the owner retired. There is not one fish store here and petco doesn't count. They sell a few saltwater fish, but they don't have crap for proper aquarium gear and what little they do have is grossly overpriced. So, enough whining. Let's talk about some of the fun stuff! This is the view from our vacation rental that is starting to book solid for the winter. By the way, we would love to host anyone from Nano-Reef and would offer a discount if you let us know you know Islandoftiki from the Nano-Reef forums. https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/8537732 And, with the winter approaching, the beautiful sunsets are heading South in the sky so we can see them again! It's bananas around here! We have three banana trees producing right now! We don't know exactly what these ones are, but hope to identify the variety once they fully ripen. We also have Apple Bananas and Nam Wah Bananas coming soon! A concert actually came to Kona! It was even a one-time A-list band! Air Supply! The concert was great. A new archery club just started up in our area! This is great because we haven't had much time to get out and target shoot since we moved here. I mean, we could set up targets at our house, but we've been too busy. So, here's something we never experienced in the big city in Portland. Our neighbor's goat, Ganja, likes to jump the fence and come visit us and our goats. We were doing something up in the garage and he came to visit. He's never been in the garage before and was super curious. He found where we keep the hay! These are our dogs. They are having one of their daily WWF wrestling matches. Boy do these dogs love to wrestle with each other. The other days as we were going through the garage and organizing things, I started to unpack my aquarium gear. So, I'm one step closer to getting something set up! I've pretty much made up my mind that I'm going to be doing a small two-ish gallon tank with a 10-20 gallon sump. But, with everything what it is here, it's going to be a while before I can tackle that project. But, humpback whale season is coming up quickly! The first whales have been spotted on Maui. This yea I'm ready, I have a GoPro camera and our kayaks are all dialed in and set to go. The best place to see whales in only a couple minutes down the road from us, so expect to see some whale videos! Stay tuned! 11 Quote Link to comment
teenyreef
Wow, great update! I can't wait for humpback whales, that will be a little bigger than the usual marine life pics here on N-R 1 Quote Link to comment
FlowerMama
This is gonna sound stupid but I i didn't know there were "varieties" of bananas. I know there's a mini one, and then the normal. That's what I love about these forums, you learn something every day! My question is, once you have a bunch that are ready, what do you do with all the bananas? I know you can only eat so many and store some in the freezer for banana bread. I can't remember if you said, do you guys have a pineapple tree too? The neighbor goat, how great that it comes to visit, or does it mess with your garage?. Do all the goats get along with each other? Are these goats milk producers? mmm.....I just thought of goat cheese grits with spicy shrimp. Whale season. How incredible. I'm gonna take you guys up on that offer at one point in my life here.
