Dr.Brain Coral
Wat is the craziest thing that has happened to your tank? Anything from the craziest hitchhiker to peaceful fish turning deadly. Link to comment
cdogsailr
May not rate as crazy, but the coolest hitchhiker I have is a comb jelly. Took me a while to identify what was fly fishing from under my plate coral. This thing sends out extra fine strands over a foot and touches nearly every coral in the tank. It literally looks like it's fly fishing. It shoots the strands into the current, flicks them gently then pulls them back fast to cast them again. Anyone else have a comb jelly? Link to comment

jservedio
Mama Ruby (clownfish) caught Geowge the midas blenny by the tail and swung him around and around till I broke it up. Three times. My clowns took down a 3" sixline - they bullied it a little for 2-3 months but nothing too bad...until.... I came home from work with the clowns flaring at it while it hid under a rock, with most of it's fins gone. Didn't make it through the night in the hospital tank. Since then, it has been a clown only tank... Then again, this isn't really "peaceful fish turned monster" since they are always, and have always been little, mean, orange monsters... Though it was weird having them kill one of the most notorious "bully fish" - so much for sixlines being too aggressive. Link to comment
Dramad1
Almost burned my house down about 7 years ago. Had a 55g visio tank up and running for about 5 years. One day I Removed the hob skimmer (cpr), for cleaning. Re installed it and went about my evening. Few hours later, looked like fireworks were going off in and around my tank. Ha ha no.... the gasket on the back of skimmer was leaking causing a pin hole size stream that was hitting the wall and eventually hitting the wall outlet. Curtains went up in flames and I had a few moments of fire works going off before the breaker flipped. Got the flames out fixed the issue and resumed reefing. Luckly I was home when this all happened. By far the craziest thing yet. Link to comment
patback
i put my hands in the tank without gloves and an apron. Link to comment
rbaby
My zoanthid exploded and did this: Oh and while removing all of my corals from my main rockwork with a drill, chisel and hammer to re-plug them and re-do my rockscape with new, dry rock...I got sick for two days from the coral toxins for not wearing gloves. rbaby
I think my hermit stayed out of the water for the weekend--I heard my dog barking at something on the floor after I heard something drop. I didn't see or notice anything so we left for our trip. Came back and noticed the hermit was on the floor--dog barked at it again so pretty sure it was barking at the hermit. Plopped it back in the tank and went right back to finding something to eat. Link to comment

Granted the pistols very very small and dainty, but even so. Link to comment
Mpy
I collected a pair of decorator crabs that ended up being a male female pair that resulted in at least one little baby crab. I have a baby sea urchin that I did not add to my tank. Either it was in a shell I added(unlikley) or one of my urchin pairs bred and had one survive the tank filtration. Link to comment
Snow_Phoenix
A mushroom squirted some water into my eye when I poked it on the back of a LR piece when I got my very first nano marine tank. I had no clue it was a hitchiker coral, and it was mad when I poked it with my finger. I then proceeded to wash my eye for 10 minutes under running tap water because it burned like hell. Had a nasty sore eye for a few days as well. Hmph. Link to comment
masterbuilder
Don't have any livestock stories that amount to much...BUT.... I did buy a $700 light with a $125 module so I could sit at my computer that's well over 3 whole feet away and adjust the color. Is that insanity? Link to comment
TJ_Burton
Once upon a time the power went out for 3 days... I spent 3 days using a bike pump attached to some aquarium tubing to keep the water circulation going... it was terrible, terrible work by the 2nd day... Minimal sleep while my gal at the time took over for me. Fun times! Link to comment
Mr. Microscope
Great thread Dr. Brain! Thanks for posting. Not my craziest story, but yesterday a fly made it into my apartment when I came home after work. It flew around all evening annoying the bejesus out of us. I jokingly said, "when I catch you, I'm gonna feed you to one of my anemones!" Hours later while in bed reading, the little bugger was bouncing off my lamp and window blinds. I waited until he crawled in between one of the blinds and gently pushed on them with my book. TL:DR.. I think the fly was still alive when I fed it to one of my anemones. lol. Link to comment

brandon429
The craziest thing Id ever had happened was finding an animal nobody on the internet could identify. if anyone here has been in reefing for more than 10 yrs you know who Ron Shimek is if there was any soul you'd place money bets on being able to id a pelagic reef tank creature, its him. and it stumped him anyone want a go? link up your proof pics if you ID it and you'll close a 6 year ongoing mystery. I think its coral planulae but not sure. http://forum.marinedepot.com/Topic107228.aspx Link to comment
jservedio
I think the coolest thing with my reef was the last time I moved between Chapel Hill and Durham, NC - which is about 40 minutes - my biggest colony of zoas wouldn't fit into the cooler (since it was basically covering a large rock). I was forced to put it in the bucket with all my other live rock which wasn't filled with water and only had a few wet pieces of newspaper over the entire bucket of rock. Anyway, they were totally out of water for a good 16 hours due to some unforeseen problems and were jumbled around quite a bit. After being near completely dried out, they were the very first coral to open up when I added water back in. Since it was jumbled around so much and the rock had a few small pieces broken off, I now have Radioactive Dragon Eyes all over my tank that I have to smother with Kalk on a regular basis. Just goes to show how resilient some coral can be. Link to comment
D Z
When I got home from work last night, I proceeded to stop and take a couple minutes to look at my tank. I noticed something weird floating around in the rear chamber. Ended up being a cockroach!!! Not sure what it was thinking..... Link to comment

gabe3eb
Definitely a Helfrichi Fire Fish I had that lived in my garage in about 2" of nasty stagnant water for over a week during a hot Georgia summer without knowing he was there. pismo_reefer
I was in the LFS the other day.... A 3" Algae Blenny was getting rowdy in one of the fish holding tanks. (Dozens of connected 8"x8" cubes, meant to display fish.) He popped the lid off of his tank, with the first "dive" attempt. The second attempt, moments later, was foiled by me.... I b*tch-slapped that fish back into the tank, from about 10" above the water level. Straight, volleyball spiked his a$$ back into the water. Thank gawd I know the LFS guys real good. They were like, "You try steal my fish!!!" Lol Link to comment
