Hammer coral flow

I've said it before, but I have to mention it again... I don't have an lfs within 80 of my home so most of my "learning" is online. I don't get to see this stuff in person. I bought a hammer coral this past weekend, and he was completely open in the spot I put him, but I was worried that a certain area on him was being blown too hard. It looked like he was being stretched apart... nearly. I moved him to a lower flow area, and he closed up more and stayed that way so I decided to put him back where he was fully open before. I JUST moved him in the video so he's closed up, but can you tell if this flow is ok? When he's fully open the glass side of him gets pushed down pretty hard when my spinstream hits him.

I didn't video it, but the same thing happened with the new Duncan except he closed up COMPLETELY. If they are open should I assume they are happy despite how hard I think the flow is pushing on them?

The tentacles on a hammer should be gently waving. Don't worry about the LFS thing 120 miles gets me to a petco and I manage just fine without a LFS.

I do feel like it's harder to learn via online only. For example, I was shocked the first time I saw zoas in person.... They were soooo tiny! And this post is an example. I don't get to see the ideal flow in person at my lfs, or discuss different methods with real life examples. What is "waving" exactly? YouTube only gets me so far. And don't even get me started on setting up my rodi without in person guidance, and limited video coverage. Actually, I should have posted that, but the forum doesn't have a comic/humor section!

Sorry you're having a hard time! I had exact same experience with zoas (although I've come to love the tiny things) if you want I can take a vid of my hammer and send it to you tomorrow through PM

The flow seems OK to me, I had mine in a higher flow area and it was perfectly happy. Just don't move it around too much. :)

I actually killed my branching hammer, but not the point! Lol. Try to keep your hammer coral in a low flow area and try not to move it until it has more polyp extension. Slowly give it flow but also, dont exactly place it infront of a powerhead/fan otherwise you can cause some damage, or so i read and accidently tore some flesh off of some of my sps lol. But im not sure if you solved the problem yet so heres just a comment to help just in case.

I just added a small one to my tank and initially placed it in the sand bed near one of the sides, similar to where yours is placed. I got decent polyp extension but it did not seem to extend nearly to the point where it was when I bought it. Even though I had the hammer opposite the side of the tank where the Hydor Korlia is, the water movement followed the sides of the tank and still produced a lot of flow.

I ended up moving the hammer away from the side of the tank, closer to what would be the "middle" where there were no easy paths for water to travel. There is still good movement but not as consistent as the flow was by the side of the tank. Now the polyps have extended even further than when I initially bought it and now it displays a gentle but random rocking motion.
