Xenia...yikes!

Partially Submerged

So, I just bought a xenia - one of the really crazy pulsing ones (was sold to me as pom pom, but I am also seeing the name "silver xenia" with pictures that look like mine). I read that they like strong current, so I found it a nice place with very strong flow. It seems happy, but the crazy pulsing is hard to see now since the current is so strong. Would I get away with putting the xenia into an area with less flow?

There are a few threads about this. I believe the lower the flow the more pulsing some of the species do.

Yeah for pulsing it likes lower flow. Wont hurt it. I have xenia in my refugium which is almost zero flow and its happy.

Brace yourself also for the fact that it can be a bit invasive. I even went so far as cooking some in a partly H2O2 solution (inadvertently -- was dipping to kill off some GHA and missed the timer) and even after cutting away the lifeless tissue, and then later the necrotic tissue that remained, tiny little hands are starting to emerge from the stump. Recommend wherever you end up putting it, isolate it to its own rock "island" Jurassic Park-style...

Note that I've got the same pom pom variety.

Please! I have a 3g Picotope with GSP on the left, xenia on the right, and a torch coral in the middle. What could possibly go wrong? :D This is actually my setup, but both GSP and xenia are confined to their isolation rocks (love the Jurassic Park reference!).

With regards to the low = flow high pulsing...Does this mean they try to create their own flow? Xenias really fascinate me. This seems like a really energy-intensive lifestyle for a coral. If anyone knows any research articles on them, I'd appreciate any pointers.

They do create their own flow.

I've been a bit frustrated with my xenia. It's great, but in a pico with decent flow, there just doesn't seem to be a place where it doesn't get whipped around by the flow and looks crappy. I could further reduce my flow, but I am not sure that would be good for the tank overall.

In my 12gal cube, I have my Xenia right in front of my pump. It only acts whip like after water changes when I've had the pump off. It tends to steady itself after a couple hours. And pulses frequently. I read somewhere that oxygen content also plays a role in the pulsing frequency.
