Nice upgrade! From a 16 to a 66 you gonna have so much real estate to play with. I love your super phat candy cane. That thing is gonna double in size in the 66g in no time.

I hear ya - I was all about the 80 but now I am questioning it- funny- I am 5'7" too- I couldn't reach the bottom of the Marineland cube- but a stepping stool isn't so bad. I can still run one Radion with the 80- but as you say it all adds up.

Here is the assessor hanging out in the back right. coming out more and more during feeding. sorry for crappy cell phone shots.

Latest scape. Light is not this blue, its actually more purple than anything, but iPhone/LEDs = crappy pic. Plus the light is 100% since I don't have it hooked up to the apex. I actually need to get a VDM for the Apex which I didn't realize... Good news though I can hook my mp10 up to it as well.

Yeah the 66 is big enough for a while. Enough room for most anything you could want. This should satiate the reefing addiction for at lease a few years. I don't know if you could get away with the radion, without supplementing it, its certainly powerful enough for the depth, but coverage may be stretching it. I know I am stretching it with the razor (hence the BML strip)and I would think the radion has similar coverage.

Thanks. Yeah it has gone from about 8 heads to 20 since april. It is really in a groove now.

From what I've been reading the width should be "ok" but I am not sold yet- been looking at the LED and T5 combos- best of both worlds do you have any experience with T5's?

Link to comment

No experience with T-5's, I have only been doing this 2 years. The results with T-5 from what I have read are great though. All tanks that I have seen in person that have really bright SPS seem to have T-5's. The drawback to me is the cost of swapping out bulbs, which is why I went with the BML strip to get the spread. You can also angle the light with the tank mounts which will make the point source closer to your line of vision, like top down viewing, but from the front. Right now just a theory on the light, but we shall see. The T-5 LED combo seems to be the way a lot of reefers are going. People (myself included) are realizing spread is just as important as PAR.

I've been just starting to research the combos- looks like the lights can last up to a yrs. which isn't to bad. They seem to run around 20bucks a light?

I guess thats not too bad, depends on how many bulbs you plan on doing too. T-5s are definitely proven in my eyes. Dave from nano box does a lot of custom stuff, which I am sure you are aware of. Seems like everyone on here has his lights!

I will let you know how it goes once I get the new tank going. I will try to get some better pics to show the color of the BML more accurately. Also, I got pods in the new tank! All over the glass. Adding a mandarin tomorrow! I kid, I kid...

Ha- that's awesome - you totally got me" adding a mandarin tomorrow" actually with some of the captive bred ones- they are taking prepared foods which opens the door right up! Ya I'll probably contact nanobox when I decide on a new tank

Here is a quick update. Built the "floating" canopy this weekend. Not too bad for building it 100% on my own. These pics show the BML light color more accurately.

GSP "Freebie" from the guy who sold me the assessor. He was clearly just pawning it off on me and I didn't really want it, actually left it floating in the bag in the new tank for half a day debating if I should just chuck it lol, but I just can't bring myself to kill stuff... Turned out to be some of the brightest GSP Ive ever seen. Its stinging the crap out of those zoos but oh well.

Great pic of the assessor. I suck at taking pictures of fish. He is beautiful though trust me. lots of blue on his head.

Tanks looking good- are you gonna put a screen top on it? Nuvo looking good too- SPS looking happy

I really don't want to but I have lost two fish to jumping so I don't feel like having that happen again. I'll probably just have one for when I am not home or on vacation. SPS doing ok, color could be better. Still recovering from alk and phosphate issues since my reactor went out and I got rid of the clam. In other news I lost my urchin a few weeks ago, possibly due to the unstable parameters, not really sure though. It was staying in a corner for a week then it just shed all its spines.

Also my fire fish died about a month ago. I noticed 3 or 4 months ago he was swimming around disoriented at times and having trouble eating. I was basically spot feeding it for a few months, very strange. It almost seemed like his vision was severely impaired. Just kept getting skinnier and skinnier, kinda sad, he was an OG to the tank. Not sure on their lifespan but maybe just got old?

Went to the manhattan frag swap and picked up A 3-1/2" Maxima, ORA Hawkins Echinata, Red dragon acro, and another random acro that I just liked the looks of (pics coming soon). Also won a bottle of acropower, and a reactor in the raffle. The reactor is a reef toys rt-red. I looked online to get some info and it appears it isn't even released yet. The ppl running the raffle said it was an 800 dollar reactor! What little info they have on the website says that its rated for 220-2100 gallons?!? A little overkill for my 66 gallon, but I will see if it will fit in my sump and I can use it. They asked me to do a review of it, but contemplating just selling it to make a few bucks.

If I do decide to run it, what kind of media do you all suggest using? looks like this thing is meant to run biopellets, but I've never run them before. I also have a BRS reactor w/ mj1200 waiting in the wings for GAC or GFO if needed.

What a great day for you! You could still use that reactor and run it at a low setting. With your SPS in the tank I would think GFO will come in handy to keep you po4 in ck. Carbon could probably also be run through it. looking forward to some pics of your acros- let's see that reactor too?

  • 2 weeks later...

Almost done with the transfer got about half the corals transferred and the last few corals and the fish / inverts should be done this weekend. Added a yellow eye kole tang to the new tank. Really anxious to get it all done at this point. Maintaining 2 tanks is a little too labor intensivefor me at the moment. Will put some pics up this weekend to document the progress.

took a few cell phone shots. Here is the current state of the sump. still need to clean up a few things, change out the metal pipe straps for plastic (the local hardware store only had galvanized at the time). I decided to hook up the BRS reactor, and plumbed it directly to my return pump with a ball valve to reduce flow. running GFO and carbon in it for now. I put some xenia in there from my other tank and I picked up some red macro algae at the lfs (they didn't have chaeto). It had these black snails in it that looked like nassarius, but I think they may be whelks, they are in the sump now, I don't think I want them in the display just in case since I have a clam. I went to petco last weekend and picked up this 8w fluval aquatic plant light for $60 bucks (regularly $90) and then walking out of the store, I found $60 bucks laying on the ground! Free light!

Here is a quick cell phone pic of the tang. He is a little shy at the moment, but grazing and out in the open when I am at a distance.

Will attempt some better pictures this weekend.
