Nualgi additive review and testing...

3rd dose will go in this weekend. Bryopsis is still turning white but hasn't gone away fully yet. This may be due to adding the goby and the feeding he now requires. As the tank gets used to this I imagine the bryopsis demise will continue.

I got off of a conference call from 3 Nualgi specialists.

They suspect that my chemical filtration (ChemiPure, Purigen, and Phosguard) is causing my alkalinity issues. More specifically, Norm (from NormalAquariums) thinks my Purigen is the main culprit.

They recommend that I take out Purigen and ChemiPure and just run Nualgi.

What do you guys think?

EDIT: I can't seem to find any sources/reports of purigen affecting alk though.

Definitely BS on their part. They are making assumptions to protect their interest. They have no basis for this, especially as purigen is a common reef medium and wasn't causing a problem for you before. Of course they want you to run ONLY nualgi - it's their product that they want you to buy. No more conference calls with them. They have no idea what they are talking about.

That's how I feel. :(

Well.. I think i'm on like dose 5 or 6.. i think 5. Heavy dusting of diatoms on the glass, but i'm late for a water change and overdue on changing GFO. Likely not due to the nualgi.

I give up on my alk issues. It's so bad now that my corals get pissed every water change because the alk of my wc water and my tank water is off by 2-3 dkH. Worst part is 12 hours after my WC, my alk drops back down to about 8ish (from 10 after WC), and slowly drops further throughout the week.

Mg 1440

Ca 440

Alk: WTFUNSTABLE.

On a side note, the diatoms from Nualgi are getting better. I, however, don't think I can provide good evidence for the effects of Nualgi, as we're also redoing our house (flooring and repainting), so these might affect my tank in a negative manner.

I'm also at dose 5 or 6.

hm... just found this thread. Sounds interesting. I might order a sample before the deadline. Anyone mention how big the sample is? I have to pay a few dollars to ship to canada so I wonder if it's enough to last a while or if I should just order a larger bottle so I don't have to order again IF I like it.

They have been sending 12 doses.

I added my first doses of nualgi to my seahorse tank (37 gallons) and my nano (8 gallons) on Wednesday :)

My seahorse tank has very small patches of cyano and turf algae and is fed heavily; my nano has no nuisance algae at all and is fed just a couple times a week. It should be interesting to see if it has different effects in the two.

Broke down and ordered the free trial bottle. I think I'll wait another few weeks before trying it out. My only issue is a patch of red slime in two areas of the sandbed. Anyone see improvement with cyano?

My dKH is always around 11-13. Ca around 440-520 and Mag in the 1250-1350 range. I don't dose, I do 50% water changes once a week and 1 gallon water changes mid week. PH stays low, 7.5-7.9 depending on morning or night.

I'm going to pull my Purigen out see how it goes for this week before my Nualgi gets here.

Getting a lot of algae on my front glass now.. I don't see any major upsides to this product... I'm assuming the bryopsis is going away because of larger water changes and a high quality light upgrade.

Today marks 4 weeks. 6th dose went in on Friday. Nothing really good to report, nothing really bad to report either. Cyano is growing in thicker. Website says up to 6 weeks to clear. I'd somewhat expect it to be dying off at this point ya?

I guess this is when it starts to get good?

well, nothin good happens quick, but 4 weeks is long enough to see something. I postponed my bulb changes and other methods to eliminate cyano to give this a chance. I'm still hesitant on using the chemiclean just because it makes the skimmer go bananas, which isn't awesome if you have an external one.

I did my first dose today. I'll try and document my findings as well. I don't have any major issues with my tank other than some bubble algae due to excess nutrients from feeding heavily. I rarely do a large water change either and only small ones maybe every 2-3 weeks. So we'll see if anything changes.

Ok, guys, as I mentioned yesterday, I did my water change today. 20% give or take.

First, prior to the water change, I did a full panel of tests.

Alk: 6.7 Pretty low in my estimation. I didn't re-test to see if there was an error in my testing though. Since the Nualgi should have "bioavailable" stuff-n-junk, I won't stress it for now, but I will re-test every couple days and slowly bring it up to at least 7 if necessary.

Calc: 500 This one has me a little stumped. Why is it so high?

Mag: 1400 Ok, so this isn't the reason my Calc/Alk balance is off...

Phos: .02

Nitrates: 5 ppm.

So, this is interesting. What hair algae is in there siphoned off of the rocks really easily. Much easier than ever before. I'd have to use a toothbrush before. The algae is definitely weaker than it was before. I managed to remove about half of it with siphoning.

Beyond that, not much else is new. The cyano is still there, but under control.

I'll take pictures tomorrow after the water clears.

Any pictures for before / after comparisons? I checked your thread but it lacks updates as well. The one common thing I see both here and on other forums is that people enthusiastically post before pics and then nothing more.

Has this snake oil made any difference?

I think they lose enthusiasm for a reason. I put a halt to my trial after 4 weeks of no improvement in the cyano. Was dosing 4ml every 4 days and the cyano was growing in thicker in some places. Resorted to lights out for 3 days, a water change, and so far good husbandry has done more for this tank in just a couple days than this hasn't in a month.

I think it might work in SOME cases... the problem is that it's being hyped to apply in ALL of them and as a general purpose water quality panacea (even to address ocean acidification and global warming?!). Over the last few weeks my own tank's apparently been experiencing hysterical mimicry of the effects of this product without a bottle being within miles of it. ;-)

Increased diatom growth - check. Receding nuisance algae - check, remaining corals filling our more than before - check (see LPS port mortem thread in Pest treatment forum)... even inexplicably low alk. I'm wondering if someone's sneaking in and dosing my tank at night as I sleep... ;)
