Back when the 'real-weather' simulations were introduced, they were only available on the PFO Solaris. At that time, some Reef-keepers found that synching their solar and lunar light cycles to natural time and simulating 'stormy seasons' during the spring and fall actually led their corals - and fish, inverts, etc. - to behave more naturally. One major change in the coral behavior was mass-spawning. Unless a coral receives the appropriate environmental signals, it remains in its asexual reproductive mode permanently. Many fish and inverts time their natural spawning cycles to coincide with the annual coral spawning events, so introducing weather patterns can have a naturalizing effect on your whole system.

Except for the light, SOL/Nano/Vega/Hydra, what do I need for the AI Director. Do I need a wifi dongle and controller?

The only thing that you would need is the Director itself, assuming that you have either a Vega or Hydra, or a SOL with the wireless adapter on it. If you have a SOL without the wireless adapter you would need to purchase that as well.
