i see a disaster if your building shuts off electricity for any reason.

Won't happen... I have a stand alone apartment with a 12 month lease. The power's going to be on unless we have a storm or something

You could easily move that tank with you :) lower the water level some and seal the lid well so you don't have a mess in your vehicle.

Oh I easily could... but I'd rather not. I already have my 40 breeder at home, and honestly don't want to mess with this for the next couple of weeks. Also, I want to keep this thing as stable as possible so that in a couple of years it will be one of the few picos of this size that will have been up for a couple of years with no outside intervention (i.e. constantly breaking down, moving, and resetting)

Also... for the record have not done a water change since the second week

So, it's been a couple of weeks since I glued my coral to the rocks. The SPS has started encrusting and the zoas are really starting to take off. Here's the tank 2 months in with what will be the permanent scape... the rock work lines up to make a gradual slope if you look at it from an angle but straight on the overhangs on the pillar create a lot of shadows that create a lot of depth.

Thought it would be cool to see what my tank looked like under some 10K lighting... used my flourescent desk lamp.

I like the look :)

Thanks! I think it's the best scape you can get with the rocks I have... definitely better than the first 2 that I tried.

I'm likin the 10K view. ;)

It looks good for a change... also my phone does a better job of picking it up than the LEDS. I need to borrow a nice camera from someone and shoot a couple of pics under the LEDS... it looks stunning in person, much better than my 40 Breeder did at 2 months old.

Sorry for the dirty glass... will get around to this after the break.

I really like the latest scape! What did you decide to do with the tank over vacation?

Probably going to take the fish home with me, seal the top up pretty good with some seran wrap and see how it does. The heat will be staying on at my place, so the heater shouldn't have to work too hard.

The real question is do I keep the fish or add it to my 40....

I've considered one of those yellowtail damsels for my pico. El Fab had one in his picotope that seemed to do fine. I think if I was going to do a fish it would either be that or a yellow clown goby. How do you like the damsel?

No issues... I thought it would have jumped by now because there are plenty of holes in my top. I think these are fairly indestructible,,, I had it with no filter or heater for about 3 weeks!! I think it's a better fit for picos than most gobies as long as you get a small one. They eat anything, can survive off of pods so you don't have to feed all the time, are super hardy, add lots of activity and color (compared to most gobies), and most importantly are probably way less likely to jump. You can always trade in for a smaller on if you feel that the one you have has gotten too big for the pico

i'd still be worried. sometimes you just get unlucky and what seems to be impossible, does happen to you (power goes off even if its 1 in a million chance as you originally thought lol)

maybe do a battery back up (ikd if its possible) or just take it home with you.

Looks nice!

  • 4 weeks later...

Kind of curious to see what it looks like when I get back in a week. Unfortunately I knocked some of the digitata off the rock work when I caught the damsel before I left. Messed up my scape a little bit, but am looking forward to getting back and adding some new frags from my display! Hopefully everything is still standing

Cleaned up the tank and glued the GSP to the back wall today. Everything looks settled and there doesn't seem to be much extra algae growth from the increased stocking. I think the key to this tank is the fact that it is BB w/ limited feeding... otherwise I would never get away with the stocking and maintenance routine that I perform. Candy Cane is recovering well, Xenia is finally spreading, Zoanthids are growing slowly but surely and the anemone is settled in the back corner

Fragged up the green zoanthids and took the hypnotic ice man off the disk. I need to find a magnetic scraper that'll fit in such a tiny tank... also thinking about switching to a split light schedule to reduce all the green dust algae on the glass. All the royal gramma does is hide, but the peppermint shrimp seem to be settling in well, took care of all my aiptasia problems as well.

Here's a bad pic... I just fragged so everything's pretty pissed off

All the frags are doing well, and I have switched to a 6 on/6 off light cycle so I can see the tank when I'm around as well as to see if it has any noticeable impact on the algae growth. I will probably also start using purigen in the filter in the coming weeks to help reduce my algae issues. I have a TON of pods all over the place, probably feeding on the algae!!

dude hit that glass with a razor blade before it turns to calcareous algae and will be much harder to remove.

Fresh out of razor blades... have been using old credit cards, but it's a pain to get your hand in the tank without knocking everything over. I will pick up a magnetic scraper soon, so the pods can feast till that happens. There isn't really any calcerous algae though, it's almost entirely green dust algae.
