It's not the algae scraper that you have to worry about, it's getting sand stuck between the scraper and the acrylic that will ruin the look of your tank. I would advise against it

Get a Mag-float from http://www.petwarehouse.com and but an acrylic scrubing pad. The mag-float is a very great cleaner. It floats so if it drops it floats back up to prevent sand getting into the pad. It also has a velcro pad on the inside to firmly hold on to the scrubber bad. I have it and i give it a 10/10.

You'll have to be careful not to get anything stuck on it!  Every magnent cleaner will work for acrylic.  They all come with a velcrow like side for the one that goes into the tank, so for acrylic tanks you just attach an acrylic-safe pad to the velcrow part.
