Fluval Spec V - Tres Islas Pequeñas (RETIRED: 10-30-13)

Added 6-7 Yellow button polyps to the left island along with a tiny 3 polyp frag of a misc. Zoas. Also temporarily stuck a frag plug into the center island with 6-7 polyps on it.

My first pink Zoa colony us having MAJOR problems. Polyps are disappearing. It's about half the colony it was a few months ago. I dipped it yesterday with Seachem Dip, followed by a RO dip. Today I also cut a couple polyps off and glued one to a Zoa dome frag disc and the other to a regular frag plug with hopes to save a remnant of the original colony.

I may have figured out what's been munching on my Pink Zoas...

I believe I caught my Hawaiian Strawberry Crab in the act. There was a 3 polyp clump on a part of the rock, which when the lights went out, was perfectly fine... 2 1/2 hours after the lights went out, Strawberry was in the neighborhood and those 3 poylps were all TORE UP ! I wanna say there are at least 20-25 polyps gone from my Pink Zoa rock, or in other words... about half the colony.

The Aqueon Evolve 2 gallon hospital tank has quickly been set up to be a "TIME OUT" tank. In the mean time I fed the guy a couple pieces of freeze dried shrimp, hopefully to hold him over thru the night.

His days might be numbered... Unless... I get moving on changing over my Oceanic 30 gallon cube to a reef tank.

This guy...

Oh... and repurchased some new plumbing pieces... the Loc-Line I bought was the wrong size. 1/2" is not Spec sized... Let's try 1/4".

Not quite sure how/what has happened, but my new Halloween Hermit and my biggest Blue Leg Hermit have gone missing over the past few days. I believe the Hawaiian Strawberry crab may have had something to do with these disappearances, along with the fact that he was snacking on my Pink Zoas. Needless to say, the Hawaiian Strawberry Crab has been removed from the Spec V tank and is in isolation in my Aqueon Evlove 2 tank.

Ordered a 2nd Mini-Jet 606 for the Spec V tank. This will get my "Max flow" up to 306 GPH with two Mini-Jet 606s in the 5 gallon tank.

(Currently have stock the Fluval Spec V 83 GPH, Mini-Jet 606 153 GPH & a Fluval Spec pump at about 40 GPH, for a total of 276 GPH)

Once I get the second Mini-Jet, I will install my new Loc-Line fittings to give one of the Mini-Jets a dual flow with a Y fitting. This will give the tank 3 directions of flow with the two Mini-Jet 606 pumps

Zoas & Palys really seem to like the flow.

Changed out my stock Fluval pump for a second Mini-Jet 606. I should have about 306 GPH according to the pump specs on the side of the Mini-Jet... Supposedly 153 GPH each.

Pic of my 24K's today under my Ecoxotic Blue/Magenta stunner, with a tiny Blue Led Hermit coming to check them out too.

Going to go look at a Innovative Marine Nuvo 16 tomorrow... Might combine my two Spec reefs into a little larger reef. Decisions decisions...

Get a im nuvo 24 and buy a aqua illuminations hydra or a maxspect razor ( razor looks real sleek)

The Nuvo16 I'm going to go look at, the people are only asking $120.00.

And Yes, you are correct, that is a really sleek look.

Sooo... I picked up the Nuvo 16.

It's quite a bit more scratched up than what I was hoping for, but they did come down from their asking price, which was $120, but like I said, they came down from that which made the ride a little more worth while.

Holds water, pump works great for only being 211 GPH. I went to Lowes and bought some tubing to run two pumps so this 211 GPH will be running with a Hydor Flo on the end to vary my current, and I'll most likely put one of my Mini-Jet 606 on the other inlet (153 GPH) giving me 364 GPH between the two pumps until I dive in and buy a better matching set to run both inlets.

Both Skkye LED lights work nice too. Media baskets seem a little small though. Upgrades or mods will definitely be needed there. Got the cool little pedestal too and the glass lid.

Sooo... I could combine both of my Spec reefs into this, or... I could use it for a larger freshwater Crystal Red & Crystal Black Shrimp tank. Leaning towards the bigger reef, since I did just go out and buy 2 - 5 pound bags of CaribSea Ocean Direct Live Sand.

Well... After running some numbers, I'm pretty sure the bookcase I was going to put the Nuvo 16 on most likely will NOT support the weight. So, I may have to put the Nuvo 16 on hold for a little bit, unless I come up with a suitable stand or table to put it on fairly soon.

I'd combine them both and either start those two specs one salt one fresh or both fresh

If/When I get around to combining the Spec & Spec V, they may become backup tanks in case something happens with any of the other Fluval Specs I have going, (all those are freshwater).

No current FTS... but this Spec V is in the midst of a rescape. I bought a IM Nuvo 16 a couple weks ago, and will be moving two of my "Three Little Islands" over to the Nuvo 16, as well as my two Clownfish, Tuxedo Urchin, Emerald Crab and the 5 hermit crabs that are in here. Then I'll rescape this tank and move the residents from my Spec into this tank. Hopefully everything goes well.

After all is moved, I'll must likely end the Spec thread - "Montón de Piedras"

My "Pile of Rocks" is now part of my "Three Little Islands" reef. They make up my "left" island now.

The center island was formerly the right island. And a I created a new right island from dry rock, Super Glue Gel & putty to include a swim thru.

There's not much going on in this video... just a quick 12 seconds of my Spec V. I only have the one Yellow Clown Goby in here as far as fish goes. Everything else is a pom pom crab, a Porcelain crab, 2 hermits, an emerald crab, 2 sexy shrimp & some snails... oh, and my tuxedo urchin I need some more flowing stuff in here, but I'm working on 3 Reef tanks, so a little here, a little there & a little over there too when I have time.

This Spec V is in the early stages of a re-scape. There's currently all the live rock from my original Spec reef is forming the left "island". The middle island, was formerly the right island in this tank. And the right island is a new cobble of dry rock I glued & epoxied together to make a little swim thru. I'm not totally thrilled with the look right now other than maybe the left stack of rocks. I'll have the little frag rack out in the near future after my 30 gallon cube cycles.

You have a 30 cube to?????? Pics , link to a thread?

It's an Oceanic 30 gallon Cube. It's the older style, about 10 years old. It was set up as a freshwater Cichlid tank until last Friday. I traded in my last two cichlids, and emptied, cleaned and changed all my filter media out with new to go to saltwater. It's only got about 16 pounds of live rock in it and it's only been running since Saturday.

Pretty bare bones right now... 20" Aquatic Life T5 Dual Lamp HO light, Hydor 425 Powerhead, Fluval C4 hang on back filter & Eheim 100W Heater. There's also an Eheim Compact 300 pump hanging on the left side for a whopping 80 GPH more flow.

This might be a fish only...

My stocking thoughts so far...

1 Onyx Clownfish (maybe)

1 Banggai Cardinal

1 Atlantic Pygmy Angel

1 White Banded Possum Wrasse or a Six Line

1 Randall's Goby - Pistol Shrimp Combo

Hopefully a Blood Red Fire Shrimp & maybe a Peppermint too.

Link to comment

Skip the six line it will more then likely become agressise

Yeah... The guys at my LFS are very helpful and one suggest a lot more tank volume for a six line. So I'll most likely go with the White Banded Possum Wrasse.

I'm thinking about reducing the flow in this tank. Originally I had the stock Fluval (83GPH) and an Eheim Compact 300 (80GPH), and switched over to two Mini-Jet 606 (153GPH each). Since I mostly only have Zoas in here, I think I'm going to go back to the originaly set up with the stock Fluval & the Eheim.

UPDATE: This morning I did switch back to my original pump set up, stock Fluval at 83 GPH & an Eheim Compact 300 at 80 GPH. Although it was neat to have to high flow from the two Mini-Jet 606s, it seemed to be too much flow for my zoas. There's nothing else in the Spec V that needs that high of a flow either.

Next up may be some more re-scaping. I'm not thrilled with the current scape.

Link to comment

Played with the scape today... and moved the tiny frag rack to my 30 gallon.

And... someone came out to play with all the scape rearranging...
