Might as well join the group. I've had this tank sitting in the box, in my basement since Black Friday. After working/learning on a 2 gallon Spec for a month, it was time to expand & try a 5 gallon reef. Boneshaker Posted January 6, 2013 Author Share Posted January 6, 2013 I like your mod with the 2nd flow nozzle thru the wall. I'll be drilling my 2nd flow in here in a few minutes. Those 2 - 40/80GPH pumps should do the trick for flow. What's are your plans on stocking this thing? Don't know yet. I'm looking at around for ideas. I'm still VERY new to the reef world. I also have to figure out where I'm going to put it. Link to comment

Boneshaker Posted January 6, 2013 Author Share Posted January 6, 2013 First MOD... Got this awesome idea from eklikewhoa and their "Little Jetty" reef. Added a 2nd flow nozzle through the wall. With my 2 Eheim Compact 300 pumps, I will be able to have 80 to 160 GPH flow in this 5 gallon tank. I also used a step drill bit to drill the correct size hole thru the back wall for the nozzle fitting. Link to comment

Boneshaker Posted January 6, 2013 Author Share Posted January 6, 2013 Hhmmmm... Interesting. The Stock Fluval pump that came in this Spec V says: Model P-200 QMax 83GPH. I'll have to think about using this, and I'll have to check my other 2 Spec Vs, to see if they have the same pump. After all, they do fit the pump bay very well. Hmmm... After fitting both the Fluval & the Eheim pump under the foam block, I REALLY like how the Fluval pump sits below the foam block, along with thinner power cord on the Fluval. Congrats on the new spec! Fill that lower hole on the back wall before filling the tank, it'll save you a lot of trouble later on. Thanks. This is my 3rd Spec V, the other two being fresh water. Yeah, I'll silicone that hole closed later today. I forgot to bring my tube of silicone to work with me tonight, otherwise it would be drying shut as we speak. Link to comment

I like what I see in some of the longer live rock cave style reefs, and I like what I see with the lesser live rock swim thru reefs. I guess the available live rock at me LFS will help dictate which direction I go. Link to comment

It might be fun/frustrating to "create" some shapes from a little larger rock. In my Spec, I purposely bought four smaller main pieces & two little bigger than rubble pieces, that I found over a few store visits. I'm also half on the fence about going the direction of getting a small clown or two, because I'm mostly sure I'm going to change my 30 gallon Cichlid tank over to a reef in somewhat near future (have to start accumulating the proper equipment for it). Then I will at least have a place to move them to as they get bigger. Link to comment
icedearth15324 Posted January 8, 2013 Share Posted January 8, 2013 For LR, I bought a few small-ish pieces to make the base, and then I found a longer rock to put across them to make a cave. My clowns really seem to enjoy being able to swim through it, and it gives my crabs more places to hide. Link to comment

I just got the Fluval V and gonna finally dive into the nano reef world..My success, on the planted side, came when I started using Seahcem Purigen!! Im goin to use it in the nano tank! Just wanted to let you know you should try it too..it really does remove a lot of impurities and it definitely makes your water shine! Link to comment

I really like the double nozzle, but think I would just screw it up if i tried to drill the tank. My question is to those that have this tank. I using the stock pump, but also added a korilia hydor 425 powerhead. I just ordered a mini jet 404. do you think the 404 alone will be enough flow?
