andi.rahl
I received a piece of live rock with some zoas on it a while ago. As I was sitting here watching my tank, one of the zoas just floated away. lol, wth? Has anyone else had this happen, or does anyone know why this happened? Im going to post a pic of them with this. There was weird stuff on them when I took the pic last night, but now it's gone. Not sure what it was. :S Link to comment
fretfreak13
It probably self-fragged itself. Zoas do this when they run out of room to grow on the peice of rock they are on. They'll pinch off little pieces that are overgrowing and they will float away to grow elsewhere. Its a reproduction thing. Link to comment
GHill762
zoas can get knocked off and float around.. never had one detach on its own though.. shooms on the other hand, I find those buggers floating around on my sand be all the time.. probably because they ran out of room in the colony.. was the one that fell off on the edge of the frag? if that's the case, maybe it didn't have a good hold.. metrokat
zoas will not self frag. lol. Palys on the other hand do not form a mat and could become detached from whatever they are on. Also in your picture on the left, I see a HH bi-valve. Link to comment
BustytheSnowMaam
Zoas do break off and float away, I've had that happen several times. Link to comment

ZX6Reefer
Paly Edit: I usually look at the "stalks" of the coral to see if there are any sand grains contained in the walls. That's the way I ID them, anyway. Link to comment
Mr. Microscope
I've noticed this only happens when there is too much algae around the polyps. Link to comment

They wont? I work at a store and see this happen to zoa colonies all the time when they compleatly cover a rock. They start to pinch in on themselves, and a nice little chunk will fall away and float off. If its not self-fragging, than what are they doing? These are definetly zoas doing this, not palys. Radioactive dragon eyes, eagle eyes, etc. Link to comment

That's the way I ID them, anyway. I do that too. So these are independent polyps, not connected with a mat or anything. They wont? Deleted User 3
they look more like the button polyp thing i have in my tank than palys or zoas lol Link to comment
fretfreak13
I havn't read it anywhere, it was kind of just me figuring thats what they were doing. I probably shouldn't go around saying it unless there was documented proof. I'll see if I can find a video or something, kat. I wish I had means of taking one myself, but I don't. =( Link to comment
patback
I had started a topic months ago about random zoas showing up on my sandbed and I never fragged in tank, definitely not those specific polyps. Zoas will self frag as far as I know. I would imagine palys could do it even quicker and easier than zoas. (Nobody ever responded to my thread like always.) And tulip, button polyps is just a nickname, like how trumpet coral can be 10 different things to 10 different reefers. Typically button refers to palys though. Link to comment
andi.rahl
Sorry I've been pretty sick. I'll read over this again later when I make it to my computer. <3 Link to comment

Dangnabbit, why don't all the cool things happen in my tank? And Pat, if this about the one polyp of Kedd reds that mysteriously appeared on the frag I sent you It was dormant! 1 Link to comment

Also, I'm not sure where in my little tank it went. My peppermint shrimp won't eat it, right? lol. Link to comment

andi.rahl
He was looking a little gape-y, the hitchhiker that is, when I last saw him. I'm pretty sure that I read somewhere that it means he's not doing so well. I don't know what condition I received him in, though. I have a few varying sized hh bivalves. Is there anything I can do to ensure they'll survive? :/ I don't want them to die. Anyway, I checked all of my equipment, made sure the water was good, and left my house the other night. I've been gone a couple of days. I was at my mom's because I needed the doctor. Link to comment
slickwill613
I've seen little one or two polyp zoas on the sand at my lfs. One of the clerks gives em to me once in a while. He said they just pop up on their own. Link to comment
