andi.rahl
lol Hi everyone, Really great posts in the beginners discussion. They've been very informative, and so far seem to be assuring me that I'm doing everything right so far. I read various forums, their threads on nano reefs, and random sites via web searches for a couple of months before getting started. I've read one of the biggest things for me to do is to go about this slowly. This has probably been this hardest thing for me to do, starting a new saltwater tank that is, because I'm a VERY impatient person. I'm sure I will be rewarded for letting the tank do it's thing/taking my time, right? Also, I'm not sure whose post it was that pointed me in the direction of fragjunky.com, but I thank you! I just found out that he's in Ft. Lauderdale (I live like 2 hours away), and that he stops by the lfs that I go to sometimes. thanks, Nicole Edit: added another pic. I keep reading mixed reviews on whether or not they're beneficial, and what type of starfish that actually is. There's probably 4-6 of them, and they honestly creep me out. :/ Link to comment
jcosmai5
Welcome to Nano-Reef. This website is very helpful and any questions you may have can definitely be answered with a quick search of the forum. Take your time in this hobby as everyone will tell you. Slower you go and more you read is more money saved. 1 Link to comment
ward827
Nice tank! Go slow for sure. You'll be rewarded with a thriving tank down the road. W- 1 Link to comment
Mstefa1
Welcome Nicole, what are your plans with your aquascape? What size tank is that? How much live rock do you have? Link to comment
andi.rahl
Welcome Nicole, what are your plans with your aquascape? What size tank is that? How much live rock do you have? thank you (and everyone else, too) To be honest, I'm not sure what to do with my scape in general. it's 6 gallons and I have like 5 pounds of rock right now. I'm hopefully picking up more in a few days. oh, I forgot to mention when I started this thread. I seem to have some hitchhikers that I'm not sure that I want to keep. (I don't know if they're beneficial or bad - I'm gonna see if I can add it to my first post) Link to comment
Mstefa1
Looks like u need more rock and you need to organize it in an interesting manor that allows u to place corals. U might think it doesn't matter when you only have a few coral but u will think differently when your stocked to the gills. Link to comment
andi.rahl
oh, believe me, I will, but I kind of threw the rock in before work the other day and haven't actually bothered with it since. Like I said, I'm getting more rock! so I'm not interested in creating something interesting/functional only to have to destroy it when I add more. Also, I added the pic of one of my brittle starfish hitchhikers to the first post. Link to comment

andi.rahl
Is it okay for me to trap and give some of them away, though? there are a couple that are pretty big, and they seem TOO big for my little 6 gallon XD Just my opinion I guess. Link to comment
Mstefa1
You can just pull them out if you can get them out of the rock. If they are threatened when you pull them they may remove their legs which of course will regrow. Link to comment
eddiecorrea
I wouldn't remove any Brittle stars. They are very fragile and die easily. Aquascaping is a tough thing to do. I like to be compact but go up. I like having an open sandbed in my tank. Link to comment
andi.rahl
I was going to thaw a piece of clam or other seafood, put it in a small water bottle, and see if I could trap any. I don't want to harm them, I just want to relocate a few of them. Link to comment

slickwill613
If you pull the brittles out ill pay to have them shipped to me. Link to comment
andi.rahl
lol, sweet, but I don't know how to ship live animals!! I'm sure it'd cost me an arm and a leg? Link to comment
Mr. Microscope
to Nano-Reef! I'm sure you'll find us a supportive community. I learned pretty much all I know about reefing here. If you have a question, even something obscure, it's probably already been answered. The search (top-right) is a great resource. I've been in the hobby for about three years and I still use it almost daily. Good luck being patient. I know first hand, New Tank Syndrom is a rough disease. Patience really pays off in the health and happiness of your tank. Link to comment
Mstefa1
Actually I love being able to stick my hands in my tank. It's when I don't have anything special besides dosing, filling my top off reservoir, and performing water changes is when I get bored. Link to comment
andi.rahl
Heh, I've been trying to keep my hands out of it since I know I will be in there moving stuff when I add more rock. Good thing I've been at work a lot and not around to mess with it. Link to comment
andi.rahl
An update: I was gone for 2 days. When I stopped by home just now, I found a random aiptasia on one of my small rocks. :/ I will be researching how to get rid of him. Though, I'm contemplating just chucking the rock. It's a small piece anyways. Link to comment

andi.rahl
So, my tank is pretty much how it was when I last commented. Minus aiptasia. I have my faithful hitchhiker bivalve, hh zoas, my brittles, my random snails, and my small population of assorted pods. I regretfully had my hours severely cut at work, and cannot afford to populate my tank. So it will run as is until I can come into spare cash. I bought a ricordea, but it's in my friend's tank still. I'm gonna ask him to frag it for me. I mean he has been taking care of it after all...so why shouldn't he get some of it, right? Hopefully I can pick up a few pieces from my local coral dealer (He doesn't really sell fish...so I feel weird calling it a lfs) for my birthday in april! I guess this could be a tank build thread eventually, but not this day, eh? :/ Link to comment
