i JUST added a ReefBrite LED strip to the 180 DT. I already have 3 250W Reeflux mogul base halides on it, and that LED bar really added some punch. I've been trying to take a dang picture but it's right by the front window and the glare is crazy at certain hours. When we set up our 265 I am thinking about blacking out the part of the window with the 180 because the 265 will be completely visible with front view anyways. I need to move a couple of fish too. I have a rescue Dussemerei Tang (spellcheck?) in there that needs about 200 more gallons pretty soon.

Very cool! Congrats. I'm in the DFW area so look forward to stopping in. W-

Come one down man. The store front is open and we even have freshwater fish coming in now. They all did great too except for one bag of male guppies, something was off there. Saltwater is under construction until mid January.

Setting up a 265 reef display next week! For now I have a 200 Gallon Tenecor Acrylic set up by the front window. I haven't posted any pics of it though...I need to get some I spose.

Oh and an 82 Gallon Euro Half Moon. It has some basic softies and a bunch of coral I had to rescue from a tank crash. It's going through it's new tank diatom bloom right now, but otherwise great water quality. It's on my cleaning list for tomorrow.

  • 3 weeks later...

The 265 is actually going to be a Malawi Cichlid tank ( it was going to take too long to get lights for the reef tank )

I've never run a cichlid tank with double overflows and a Trigger Systems sump but hey, it ought to do the trick. lol

Casco makes cool stuff I must say, we have an old system, but all cleaned up and with Reef-Brite LEDs it looks pretty cool.

HAHA if I could afford to do it...I still wouldn't, that would be crazy lol.

Sales are steadily increasing. Have sold more tank setups than anything else, which is always nice. Nuvos are quite popular as well. Once the SW department is fully op. things should take a dramatic swing for the better, can't be an LFS without the F ya know? But we are almost done with the plumbing and then it's just a matter of filling the bad boys up. Already got the rock curing and have more than enough Fiji Pink waiting to get poured in.

Store looks great! Are you planning at all on setting up/ maintaining systems outside of your shop? I know the LFS near me does a big part of their buisness that way, setting up reefs at movie theaters, malls, etc. Just wondering!

Been trying to convince my girlfriend that opening our own store would be fun (a lot of work and pain in the ass, but fun). She doesn't think so :( She loves fish and aquatic life more than me (and reptiles/birds/etc), not sure where her dislike for the idea comes from.

How much money do you think it cost you, initially, to get going (if you'd prefer not to post that I understand)?

I'll tell you this. It's more than 50,000$ but less than 200,000$ (in this case) The last store I worked for cost over 1,000,000.00$

Location, location, location, and you HAVE to have service clients. This is where most of our actual dollar income comes from. Most LFS that last are similar in this way. We aim to have servicing alone pay the monthly overhead, which allows the store to be more flexible with what goods we carry and at what prices. We also lease tank setups. Basically you pay the initial wholesale cost of the new tank, stand, and top, then we outfit it with our equipment and stock it. All you have to do is pay a monthly bill which includes the cost of servicing bi-weekly and feed the tank, and the rest is on us. If something dies, I replace. If a pump quits, I replace, etc. At the end of your contract if you would like to make one extra lease payment, you get to keep the setup. It's a heavy equipment lease to most offices, hospitals, retirement homes, etc. and they write it off anyway.

That sounds like a pretty good business model to me. Probably a lot more difficult to survive if you have to rely solely on retail sales out of the store. I like that leasing idea...

I have the tail end of UV Bulbs' line as well ( they are going out of business) I guess when they are all gone, I will replace them with Wavepoint or something.

Yes online sales is our end of the year goal.

The Casco system is up! I have to angle the drains from left to right starting at 10 inches and sloping downward so it will properly drain, but other than that it's done! I aslo found out we have some tanks that leaked a little so we might have a couple of gaps on the bottom with plugged plumbing until the replacements get here. Casco acrylic is EXPENSIVE lol.

WHERE IS MY NIKON USB CABLE!?!?!?! I want to post MOAR pics
