I certainly hope you didn't throw the whole rock away on account of what was posted above. While it is a nuisance algae, it's nothing to be alarmed about, especially if you are cycling your tank. There are several ways to deal with it. The one I'm going to recommend is the easiest way to deal with it, but the hardest to stick to (since you are new to the hobby.) Simply turn off your lights. Without light, algae can't grow. I cycle all my tanks without light for exactly this reason. Link to comment

I didnt throw the live rock away, I was going to try and brush or scrub it off but if leaving the lights of will kill it than that sounds much easier. Thanks Link to comment
