jadedanime
I beg to differ, especially being as dark as a green as that is. It definitely looks a lot lighter in the second test. So I plan to use that color as my base 0. Link to comment
TeflonTomDosh
It definitely looks a lot lighter in the second test. So I plan to use that color as my base 0. it will lean more towards the 0 when you're where you need to be. What're your nitrates at? Link to comment
h8z2luze
Really guys? lol Take some Mixed salt water that you know is clean and test it... use that as your 0 color. Link to comment
jadedanime
Lol it's all good. The second test is next to identical to the fresh SW. And nitrates are around 40 currently. I have to retest tonight to see the effects of the new LR. I also think I might as well upgrade my light. I think the corals that came ...and that halimeda won't survive with the light. jadedanime
Bump for the ID's on page 2 Also what lighting do you guys suggest for this tank? Would a 10K pure white light work? I think the tank is in serious need of some white. I would like to keep it under $50... with clamp etc. Would another clamp light similar to the one I have work... would two of them be too much? I need to know rather quickly so I can save these corals and macros from melting ....hopefully Thanks. Link to comment
Chew_Magna
If you want to keep it under $50 just go get a 10 or 20 watt 50/50 bulb. They're around $20 or less. Link to comment
jadedanime
I will probably do that. Do those just screw into any lamp? I haven't ever actually looked at them that closely. I found some calcified coral shells coming back to life. Real faint green right now, I'll post pictures later tomorrow if I can remember. I also found some feather dusters I have a feeling I will be finding things for months with this rock. So much life!!! Also realized I have AT LEAST two majanos... not sure what I plan to do with those yet. Maybe grow them out and sell them to the LFS...if they will take them. The red sponge (i assume it's a sponge, nobody IDed anything for me... ) opened up and started to siphon water. As did the clam. I ordered my CUC today. Going to do a water change the day before they arrive. SO probably tuesday. I wish I had started this whole adventure earlier! I can't believe how much fun this is! Link to comment
jadedanime
Tested my water some. Ammonia: ... some. API sucks. Nitrite: 1ppm Nitrate:20ppm Calcium 380-400 KH: 11 I think I lost a lot of my bacteria when I removed the old rock. Plan on moving my wc up to tomorrow. Plan on doing 2 gallons. Should help the levels. Link to comment
Chew_Magna
Yeah, those bulbs just screw into a socket. I still have one in a lamp as an emergency backup. Link to comment
jadedanime
Mk sounds like a plan then. I found some bubble algae on a rock. I tried dabbing it with peroxide. I couldn't dip the rock because it just so happened to be the one with my giant red sponge. Unfortunately I can't have crabs apparently in my dorm.... and I don't trust my RA to let me slide for a week or so until the crab would need removed. So hopefully removal with tweezers when they get big enough and peroxide on the small ones will help kill it. I guess that means my nitrates and phosphates need to come down though. Although I can't see how I have phosphates since I use distilled water.... Hrm. Who knows, maybe it's just the nitrates. Water change in the morning then. OH and does anybody know how to remove and relocate majanos? Can you pull them off without killing them... and without them respawning? I would like to move them onto LR fragsments so the can get light and hopefully grow to the point where they can be given away. Link to comment
Chew_Magna
Why can't you have crabs in your dorm? Its not like they can live if they somehow get out of the tank. Link to comment
jadedanime
Because "it's not a fish". SO by that standard I can't have snails either....but of course we all know that snails are rather important to keeping a reef healthy and clean. SO i plan to attempt to take all the snails out and put them into a bag with some algae during the week we have room inspections to keep them hidden while I'm at class. At night, of course they can go right back in, nobody does a room inspection between 11 and 6. So THAT shouldn't be too bad. Snails are slow, and I worry I couldn't catch a crab. Trust me... I wanted a pom-pom.... I'm incredibly sad. But I really can't afford the fines. They go $20 the first, $50 the second, and expulsion from the dorms the third. I knew of a girl who got kicked out for an aquatic frog. Que sera sera I suppose. I'm all for breaking rules... but I need my education lol Link to comment
Chew_Magna
That's one of the stupidest things I've ever heard. Link to comment
jadedanime
Yup! I was talking to my bio prof...ok ok I was showing off my new tank and how excited I was for the diatom bloom and little bugs on my glass... and she completely agreed with me. The spirit of the "fish aquarium" is to have aquatic animals. Not literally fish. The frog situation would still be against the rule because frogs are semi-aquatic species. I also talked to the zoology prof and he agreed with us. I can argue with my RA all I want, but the truth is I would get expelled before the change would occur. It would bring up too many issues. I ordered my CUC anyway. I'll hide the tank or something. Place paper over the glass "to control the algae since I don't have snails". She'd know what I was doing, but she wouldn't take any active initiative to check. She's a rule follower...but not a bit**. Link to comment
jadedanime
Water tests show no detectable signs of anything last night. Calcium and KH up around the same levels, if the calcium isn't a tad bit higher from the WC. One of my bigger majanos mysteriously disappeared last night. Not that I particularly mind, it's less work for me. Still have two babies floating around....but I wonder where it went to. Haven't seen anything that would have eaten it, just pods and bristleworms cruising around. Hrmm. Anybody have any ideas? Link to comment
Chew_Magna
It might have gotten disturbed and drew itself in. Link to comment
jadedanime
I guess. But it didn't look like anything was in it's hole. It's a small hole to begin with.... more of an indent really, so I can't see it hiding in there. Do majanos pick up and move like other nems? Link to comment
jadedanime
Maybe he just decided he didn't like the shade then. Idk. We'll see if he turns up. Link to comment
jadedanime
I found him... hiding between the rocks in the tunnels. I also found two aiptasia. Or at least not pretty majanos. SO I attempted to scorch them with a lighter. We'll see if I had the right spots or not. Link to comment
jadedanime
Got my pile o' snails. And holy crap did I get more than I bargained for lol I think I ordered 5 or 6 dwarf ceriths... I easily have fifty. I figured I would get maybe ten...Wow. Hopefully when they die from lack of food they don't cause too too much trouble for the tank. I don't think a single one died in transport. Awesome. Link to comment
jadedanime
My halimeda is starting to make a good recovery. There are new leaves sprouting up in places where the halimeda was previously ripped off. The light seems to be ok, it's supporting the halimeda and some ulva. (At least whatever the snails haven't munched on) Moved the ulva into a floating container so the snails couldn't get it. Thinking of getting a soap container and drilling it to hold magnets. That would protect it while still allowing the plant to take in nutrients. All tests seem to be reasonable. No ammonia or nitrite, low nitrates, good calcium and kH. Thinking of getting a hermit for funsies. Or a shrimp......I just want something with some personality...but something that I can hide from my RA lol. Has to be catchable. Link to comment
jadedanime
Oh dear god... Bryopsis in the tank. Going to war with my peroxide. Think I killed a few worms along the way...oops lol. Link to comment
jadedanime
Well gee that was fast, the bryopsis have practically disintegrated. My clam and coral seem to have no ill effect.... and my tank params are spot on. Now Let's see how long it takes for it to grow back.... Link to comment
jadedanime
Just ordered my first corals from SaltCritters. Just some mushrooms and a couple pink zoas. Can't wait for them to get here! Link to comment
