Macro Algae For a Mantis Tank?

Hey guys,

I'm not really up on display macro algaes, so I'd like some opinions from folks who are.

I'm currently cycling my 25 gallon mantis tank. My ultimate plan for this tank was just the single G. Ternatensis mantis shrimp and discosoma mushroom corals. Then I got to thinking about my cleanup crew, and how that poses a problem with a mantis. I'd be less concerned if I were doing another pest tank, but no pests are planned for this tank. So, then I was thinking about adding some macro algaes in with the mushroom corals. I think that would give it a nice look. On top of that, the macro algaes would assist with water quality.

So, my question is, does this sound like a good idea, and if so, what are some recommended macros?

I'm going to be lighting the tank with a 20" AquaticLife T5 HO fixture... Two 18W 420/460 Lamps, One 18W 700+ and one 18W Purple Lamp.

Does this sound like a good setup for macros?

Any other thoughts or opinions? There's a link to the tank build in my signature.

Also, I'm thinking about building an algae scrubber in the back chamber where the bio-balls once went.

I think it would work out. You should get some high light macros so the mantis doesnt disturb them. Let him figure out his burrow before you place the macros in there so you can work around his likings :). I would look into Dragons breath (Halymenia), red grape (Botryocladia), Spiky ball (Hypnea pannosa), Gracilaria would be a few good ones. If running a Fuge then use cheatomorpha as its an amazing choice for nutrient export. Good luck!

I agree with VB. I was going to suggest Dragons breath and red grape. Both add nice color and don't grow fast. Lighting sounds like it will be great for the Macro.
