freshwater light conversion

So when I got my 40br tank the guy gave me a 36" coralife T5 dual lamp fixture with it. however, the bulbs in it were for freshwater use.

My question is, can I just change out the bulbs for more reef compatible bulbs? Or is it better to just buy a new fixture?

Will this one fixture be enough with 2 bulbs? or should I get another one as well?

I'm starting to set up a tank that will hopefully have several lps and sps corals in it and I know the lighting is a huge part of it, so I want to make sure I have what's needed.

You can just swap the bulbs however it won't be enough light. You would need at minimum second light however you may want to consider 6 bulbs or MH or LED.

so in striking the sps and keeping with soft and lps........

I'm not sure that the N.O. T5 will give me enough wattage to make the corals happy. I think you're right in getting 4 T5HO fixture and bulbs.

Just a shame that the light fixture is kind of wasted but lights are important and I don't want to skimp :D

Or you could be at my end of the spectrum and cook corals! I have a spot in my tank where I cook anything up high including SPS.
