nicksatx
first id like to say that this site is awesome ive been reading old posts and the articles alot lately and i think im ready to start my tank. i have a 10 gallon aquarium with a small power head and a hob filter with no medium in it for circulation. im going to buy aragonite sand and around 10-12 lbs of live rock probly saturday. i already have the water mixed up in the tank and i was just wondering when i bring the rock home do i have to acclimate it if so how do i do this? since its not coming home in water from the LFS i dont really see how its even possible, but i want ot make sure. the temps are around 75 degrees(my hydrometer only works at that temp) specific gravity is 1.023. i only have the stock 15 watt light on my tank but im only keeping live rock and fish at first. ill probly upgrade later tho. ill get some pictures up when i get eht live rock home. so if theres anything im missing please tell me. peace Nick Link to comment
Barry Cuda
Live rock has to be cured. Basically this means letting it sit in a container of saltwater with a heater and water circulation until the critters on/in it quit dying and the ammonia/nitrites are gone. Fortunately, if you're just starting your tank, you can do this in the tank and cycle the tank at the same time. If you don't have any livestock at all, I'd just set the liverock up in the tank and let everything run...you may need to do some water changes during the cycle, but you'll just need to watch for ammonia to spike and come down, followed by nitrites, just as in any cycle. EtOH_is_good
i just got my live rock today. yesterday, i made my water and brought it up to temp. today put some of the water and a PH into a bucket. swished the rocks around in the bucket (gets rid of sediment). picked off visable dead stuff, then put the rock into the tank. the water and sediment in the bucket was pretty nasty, so i didn't keep the water. kept the sediment for to feed the live sand. if you're not keeping fish you can bump your sg to 1.025 Link to comment
nicksatx
thanks for the replies. i realize the rock has to cure. i was just wondering about putting in the tank but i guess i dont need to do anything special. just wondering etoh but what benefit is there to having the sg at 1.025? i do plan on keepign fish but obviously not until the tank has cycled. if its beneficial could u raise the sg till the cycle is done then drop it back down when i get the fish or would i have to do it slowly? EtOH_is_good
average ocean sg is 1.025 is reason for me. need to keep things constant one way or other. leave it at 1.023 if you want, but i haven't really read why fish do better with lower sg. i'd think it'd be just an additional stressor that they don't need to have.
