Need Live sand?

I was thinking of setting up a 10 gallon reef and wondering if I need live sand, or if I could just have Dead sand and Live rock. I would be using biological filtration only. Thanks for help.

Live rock will do fine with regular sand. The rock will "seed" it with life. :)

Got it, but if I may ask why?

Because it's likely loaded with a lot of dirt and other bits that you don't want in your tank.

+1

I even sifted my live sand to get out undesireable large chunks of shell or gravel
