adams86
I have been cycling my tank for two weeks now (only thing I've seen so far are a few bristleworms) and I've noticed alot of evaporation, but I have only topped off once, because my salinity seems to be staying the same. I have a glass top on the tank and I noticed salt buildup on the glass, could this account for the difference? I thought I could just "eye it" and fillit to the fill line, but I check my salinity and it seems ok..... Should I get rid of the glass? Can I put something else like mesh or something over the top? Any suggestions? Thanks! 10 gl AGA 15 lbs LS 15 lbs LR Penguin 550 PH 50w Heater No lights yet Link to comment
Aiptasia
It's salt creep. When salt water droplets dry out they leave behind the sea salts. You can wipe them down with a paper towel and some fresh water to remove the salt. When the tank water evaporates, it should leave behind the sea salts as well and your overall S.G. will go up over time. It just depends on your evaporation rate and how much water you replace when you do your topoff. Link to comment
djconn
Keep toping off with ro/di water and checking your salinity. The salinity shouldn't change. I do topoffs as often as possible to avoid pH swing. Auto-top off float switches really help with all this. I've got one in my 20gal and it rocks! Might want to consider getting one at some point. pyrrhus
salt creep should be knocked back into the tank as the composition of the creep and salt mix are different. this isnt a big problem short term but over time you can potentially poison your animals with too much of something in the salt mix. oh yeah, TOP OFF DAILY!!!
