Scorched
Two whole days without an update??! What is this trash????? Im here all the time, lurking in the shadows..... There isn't much to share most weekdays. Things grow, water and filters get changed. The weekend though... oh man!! New purchases are always possible, and I have 2 possibly lined up already. There is a girl scout fundrasing event at my favorite store, and the father of the scout is a friend of mine so we will be exchanging a frag or two. And while at the store if I spend enough moola I get free boxes of cookies. Win Win!! The only other tank related thing to share, that I just noticed yesterday, was a zombie revival of my Spongodes. In my Aug FTS you can see it on the top right rock. In the next FTS it is completely white. All of my montis were being killed off by Nudis and I ended up just ripping all of them out and waiting months before I tried new caps and encrusting frags. Well low and behold I look behind my tank (something I rarely do since there are no corals back there and its close to the wall) and see a tiny nub of green and some polyps. So in about 2-3 years it might be something again lol Man this tank is looking awesome! Thanks jball!! Im really digging your ricodia section in your tank. Quote Link to comment
Scorched
Fish and Frag Update Settled on a Purple Dottyback. I'm hoping he is on the more peaceful side. When he was added he scoped out the tank and all the nooks and crannies. The Blenny and Clown quickly held their dominance over their favorite spots so I'm hoping they all get along and have their own places. And using a local club members suggestion I picked up an orange Leptastrea coral. Its an interesting piece as its very similar to a tightly grouped zoa colony. When I first added it all of the polyps were retracted and it glowed bright orange, but as it became more comfortable all the tiny purple edging puffed up and covered up a majority of the cool orange centers I'll get pictures of the real things in my tank tomorrow. 1reefluvr2
Cool fish and frag! That frag looks alot like tyree psamocora i think its how you spell the darn thing but looks really close. Are you dosing your tank??? ....... Wth!!! Happend to XII did Kat scarehim off again. Quote Link to comment
Scorched
The psammocora is the green branching coral I have on my middle rock. Here is something I found with a quick google search. It looks similar so I don't know if someone has it misnamed. The Psammocora doesn't usually form circular polyp rings. http://www.jasonfoxsignaturecorals.com/product_p/sps-5.htm Quote Link to comment
1reefluvr2
Actually the psamocora is an encrusting ring like having coral mine isnt branching one bit . It is nice yellow and growth is neon yellow. Its a tyree coral ill see if i could email XII a pic so he could post it. Quote Link to comment
Scorched
Ya Jason has his mislabeled. Here is an orange psammocora. The one I linked before is a Lepta. And ya I don't know what happened to XII. He ran out of new equipment and videos to show off. Quote Link to comment
1reefluvr2
Nope thats not it. Poor little XII. Quote Link to comment
Scorched
Are you dosing your tank??? ....... I actually am not. I tried the kalk thing last summer and I think that was another thing that was doing more harm than good. Its such a small amount of water that adding it was probably just causing the levels to swing up and down daily. I've since just increased my water change volume and do it diligently every week to keep bad things low and good things replenished. 1 Quote Link to comment
1reefluvr2
+1 on the kalk thing i started doing it but just noticed it isnt helping some of my acros . I just started doing the regular top off with water instead if adding kalk. Did you start having tissue something with your corals? Quote Link to comment

Did you mean "was I having issues with my corals" or "tissue problems with my corals" Either works and yes tissue on many of the corals slowly died away, it took a few weeks or a month but they would eventually lose everything and just be white skeletons. After I stopped Kalk and just went with water changes, and changing a few things with my filter everything has been great. I haven't lost a coral in months (except for one, a Hawkins, that died overnight probably due to being sensitive to dipping) Everything grows slow for me and could probably be sped up with a calculated dosing system, but for now my corals are alive and colorful and I don't want to change things if its working. Scorched
Since my wife was giving me a hard time with losing the firefish and wanting to get a new one I had to email her this this morning. 1 Quote Link to comment
ChouDawg
That's how I felt Sunday when I couldn't find my new Sixline, found him in the overflow. Good chance for me to spot feed him a few pellets which he gobbled up happily. Surprisingly the peppermint that's been banished to the overflow didn't get torn apart by the temporary Sixline guest. 1reefluvr2
Yes thats what I meant about the tissue pealing away , theres a name to it but i couldnt remmember. What type water are you using? What calculateions are you speaking of? Are you talking about finding out how much cal, mag, alk are consumed by tank and only adding what is needed? I wonder if its hard tO do. Quote Link to comment
eedn2010
Yes i do have a tank, just a simple 10 gallon nano for now, i update it on youtube often.(http://www.youtube.com/user/eedn2010) like the new fish and frags! Quote Link to comment

Ya I was really worried in the morning as I didn't see the fish for over an hour, but eventually he poked his head of a burrow he made underneath a rock and I really was doing the success kid fist thing. Glad yours survived as well. Slow Tissue Necrosis. Its usually an Alkalinity problem. I am using RODI with Red Sea Coral Pro salt. So it mixes higher with Cal and Alk, so when I do my water changes I am replenishing those elements but as things continue to grow just water changes might not be enough. The way to do it is to use a precise testing kit and test it every day at the exact same time. Then monitor it over a week or two and you can see how much is bring used per day. After that you can calculate how much needs to be dosed per day to replace what was used. You continue to test during this initial period to see if you are keeping it level or adding too much or not enough. My tank was just not using enough and even though I thought I was adding only a small amount of Kalk with my top off each day it was too much of a swing. So I just add RODI now each morning. Yes i do have a tank, just a simple 10 gallon nano for now, i update it on youtube often.(http://www.youtube.com/user/eedn2010) like the new fish and frags! Thanks I'll check it out! 1reefluvr2
Got that about the tissue loss. Its weird couse only my blue tip slimmer has it and one of my pulchura acros have it everything else is great . I do 1 gallon a week of water changes and i was doing kalk with top off. But after I saw the tissue peeling away figured my alk was to high ill test today before I do a water change and ill test all week to see how much it drops then ill just start the 2part b-ionic stuff. Could to high alk do it also? Quote Link to comment
JayPagi
What's the noise level like when the water level starts to drop, do you get a slurping noise with the bulkheads? Quote Link to comment
Scorched
Its actually the opposite. If the water level rises too high no water can get in the tube and it forms a siphon. This causes the water to drain quickly and it drops letting in a large bubble of air and turbulent water. This can happen over and over as the water level rises and falls. And for me this causes a loud slurping sound. When the water level is lower it allows a full stream of air into the tube and it is quite quiet. I run it just high enough that a small amount of air is always let into the bulkhead and it is silent. All the noise from my system comes from my humming pump. 1 Quote Link to comment

I'm thinking of converting to something similar. Keep up the good work this build is really unique and inspirational. Quote Link to comment
Scorched
Go for it. I think I've inspired a few builds mimicking this style. DCUEVAS74 just started a tank using a single drain and return and he said he loves it. 1 Quote Link to comment
