It will be 24 inches on each side square. 12 inches tall. I want to drill the overflow and return right in the middle of the bottom panel of glass. What thickness, type of glass do I need? Can I use the glass from home depot? Lastly what sealer should I use?

1/4" minimum

3/8" for that warm fuzzy feeling

100% silicone or if you want to spend a bit more money for something with more adhesive properties "which I would do if you go with 1/4" get some Dow 999A

There are other good ones out there too that's just what I use.

I'll do the3/8. Is the glass at hd ok? I don't need like a special type of glass for the bottom? Since I will be drilling it? I'm going to try a small version of that volcano tank with the crabs

No, standard plate glass is fine, however your gonna have some sharp edges on that stuff unless its already precut and polished.

Suggestion would be just to call up a local glass guy and give him the measurments and tell him you want polished flat edges. This is something that most places offer. Plate glass is very cheap and should cost you no more than 75 for the tank with nice edges.

Unless you like stitches that much :D
