Aquarium UV Sterilizer

Should i use a Aquarium UV Sterilizer for my tank even tho i dont have any problems wrong with my water....A friend told me i should own one and have it running all the time, is this true?

While it isn't necessarily wrong to use one; they are not necessary, they are rarely used except to deal with bacteria blooms, and they can harm beneficial plankton.

UV is probably better suited for fresh water. In a marine tank, it can be used sparingly to deal with bacteria and algae blooms. As seabass mentions, it will kill the good pods too.


I've read some who use it just to polish off for a couple of hours after a water change, then yank it. But they were maintaining a Hotel aquarium, so appearances were everything.
