wenhamjj
I am in the process of gathering info on setting up a nano reef. I have read that when installing LR it should be placed on cut off PCV pipe to keep it off the bottom and to make it's bottom flush with the substrate. Anybody have anything to say about that? Also should I cycle the tank with both LR and LS at the same time? Thanks! Link to comment
MrKrispy
Put it all in at the same time. I bought a couple of pieces of base rock and put the good rock on top. That way burrowers can't topple my towers of rock. Link to comment
irabren
Definitely cycle with LS and LR - I'm not sure about using pvc under the rock - I read this too - but from set-ups Ive seen - it seems many don't do this. Interested too in comments from others on this! Link to comment
wenhamjj
I think the theory behind it it so that water can curculate more freely under the rock as well. I havent seen enough info telling me that I should elevate the rock. Link to comment
irabren
Well since in the ocean - the rock sits sand and not pvc - I guess its okay - Just like in the ocean there is no plenum (lol) Link to comment
CU_Reefer
The rock should lie on the bottom or be supported by something other than the sand. PVC is there just to raise the rock up and support it. You pay enough for LR why should you burry 2 in of it. Any shifting in the sand can cause a collapse if it relies on the sand for support. Link to comment
wenhamjj
I see your point. What would you say a good depth is for the substrate? Is there any general concensus on substrate depth? Link to comment
Steve973
from what I've read, an inch is good, or 2 inches max. if you go higher than that, you can get into trouble, from what I understand. Link to comment
zzpw3x
There is no evidence to show that supporting live rock with PVC helps anything. Hundreds of us have tanks w/o PVC. Link to comment
irabren
I've also read that a deep sand bed is NOT the way to go. 1-2 inches is better. Link to comment

My boyfriend has started a 2 1/2 gal mini reef tank...We noticed a fireworm and bought a trap to extract him. Two weeks later the trap has failed and there is another worm...Should we keep trying the trap or get an arrow crab? And if we should get an arrow crab do we treat it as fish when introducing it to the aquarium? You know the standard wait at least 30-45 min to prevent shocking?:*( Link to comment
dyceskynes
Deep substrate is great...but not on tank as small as nanos, they can not support the life in the sand bed as well. You can have your sand deeper just make sure that you get critteers to stir is up like nassarus snails. Link to comment
