Not that I know of. Can you calibrate the unit?

 

If so, (or even not ) check it against some RO or Distilled water ... whatever ya have. should read zero .

i think measuring the salinity at different temperatures will affect the outcome.

but i may be wrong.

well yes mine was made to measure accurately at water around 78˚.

 

but would washing it in cold water do anything to it?

i dont think so. but i would recommend a refactometor.

No damage done!

All it is is a plastic with a very specific weight that floats at different levels depending on the density of the water around it. The only thing that can go wrong is if it gets gunked up and the arm doesn't swing. That said, they're not terribly accurate to begin with, but will get you in the right direction.
