What is a "starry eye" hermit??

I bought two Starry eye hermit about 4 weeks ago. Two weeks ago they both molted (within 2-3 days). After the first one molted I threw in a bigger shell and sure enough he moved to the bigger shell the next day. After the second one molted I also threw in a bigger shell and it took him three days to decide that he wanted to move.

 

I notice the first one is stronger and bigger but they live together just fine so I did not pay a lot of attention.

 

Last night when I came home my son said the "big guy's" shell is empty and I told him he is just sleeping inside the shell and don't worry. Later I noticed the shell is not moving and it really looks like empty so I started to search the tank looking for a naked hermit.

 

Well, I found him- a dead body.

 

My wife and I were scratching our heads trying to figure out what's happening. why? The water is perfect and during the day both hermits are ok.

 

We finally get our conclusion today that the big guy is fine. He just moved to the smaller guy's shell and killed (or kicked the smaller guy out) the smaller hermit. I am surprised to learn that he would kill for a shell (that is marginally bigger).

 

After reading "hermit ultimate fighting championship " on the NR forum here I think I understand hermit crabs behavior now...

 

By the way, what is a "starry eye hermit"??
