LFS has a hawaiin dwarf moray in thier 12g and it seems to be doing very well.

I was wondering if anyone else had an eel in a nano(like 20g or less)

ZOBBIEBEANO

Eels put out allot of waste not as much as a puffer or lion but a significant amount. Filtration is the key to any successful tank. There are exceptions to any rule. But use caution.

ok, maybe I should clarify...just because a few people have an eel in a nano does not mean it is a good idea. There is an LFS out here that has 2 tangs and a baby grouper in a nano also...you guys wanna run out and do that too?

The bottom line is that I am not the eel, tang or anything police...you wanna stick a nurse shark in there too, go for it.

so to answer EnderG60's question, yes fish that grow to 3 feet love living in tiny tanks curled up their whole lives...

All tanks are tiny, when compared to the ocean. I don't mean to explode the board with a debate over the moral high ground, but I think there's not much difference between a 12g and a 200g reef tank. It's captivity. The animal doesn't like it. We as humans don't care much about that. There's a reason it's called the Ornamental fish trade hobby.

Now hold on, don't riot or anything.

1. I'm not saying that it's cool to abuse animals of any kind.

2. I'm not calling anyone lame

3. I do recognize that there is a world of diff. between the water conditions and quality of life in a 12g nano versus a 200g super system. But...

The fish probably wouldn't see any difference, if you could ask them. Captivity is captivity. I think it's kinda silly when the Tang Police come out of the shadows.

"DOOD U NEED TO PUT UR TANG IN A 40000 GALLON AQUARIUM IT SWIMS 4 MILES EACH DAY IN THE OCEAN"

No matter what size aquarium you get for the tang, it's not going to be big enough.

you know what, your right Hwarang. 12..200 same thing.

I'll round up and call a 12gal a 15 for the sake of argument

15 gal dimensions...24x15x12

200 gal dimensions...96x24x20

yup, more or less the same.

Notice that the 24 inch dimension of the 15gal is smaller than half the size the eel can actually stretch out to (40+ inches). So dont even worry about swimming...there wont be any.

So I think the eel may...just may, have an issue with that.

I guess I'll reduce my point to clarify it:

It's all "too small" if you really consider things from the animal's perspective (which we don't, or we wouldn't keep them in captivity).

JL, my point was that Ender asked if he could keep a Dwarf Moray in a 12 gallon tank. I agree a 12 gallon is too small, but somehow it looks to me like the guy is getting flamed for keeping a 3 foot eel in his tank. When that is not what he asked. He could get away with the eel. Equating a 6" eel to 2 tangs and a grouper is not fair, especially when that is not what he asked.

I should clarify why I referenced the 2 tangs and grouper... to allude to the fact that I am not the tang or eel police, not to compare it to keeping a dwarf hawaiian eel.

I am simply stating that keeping an eel in that small of a tank, "just because the LFS has one" doesnt really mean much since the LFS I refered to is clearly putting a questionable amount of fish in a nano cube.

I am not comparing 2 tangs and a grouper to an eel though.

I'm not flaming anyone either, usually flames require some sort of demeaning of the other person and making fun of them. I think we have kept this pretty civil...

I have my views you have yours...

actually I wasnt asking if it could be done or if it was a good idea....

I was asking if anyone has done it, just curious to see whats been done.

and just to clarify no i dont think its "right" to keep an eel in a tank it cant stretch out in.
