SirDeimos
I have a standard 10 gallon aquarium with a penguin 100 HOB filter and a mini-jet 606 for extra water flow. Until recently I had the 606 mounted in the middle of the right side of the tank, with the inlet facing towards the water surface. A week or so ago one of my snails wandered into the intake and was shredded. I thought well that happens sometimes, but this afternoon I come home to one of my clownfish dead in the pump intake. The fish was bruised where the intake was, leading me to believe that he was killed by the pump, not that he simply died in the tank and was pulled into the intake. Has anyone else had problems with mini-jet 606 killing their fish? Can anyone recommend a safer powerhead? As of right now I have turned the intake 90 degrees and pushed it up against the front of the tank to protect my other clown fish. Thank you. Link to comment
nor_cal_nano
Bruising and injuries can occur post mortem too Link to comment
SirDeimos
True, and I'm not in the business of doing fish necropsies. The injuries just felt premortem to me. Plus the little guy was swimming happily, and eating voraciously up until about 3 hours before I got home. Link to comment
hooligan_78
Is your intake not covered? I've used WAY bigger powerheads and never had this problem. How small was your snail? To get pulled into this strainer: My snails crawl all over my MP40 and don't get sucked in. As far as your clownfish, could have been sick to begin with. If it was wild caught, it could have had a parasite, there are several culprits that could be to blame. If it was in fact your powerhead; I would look at getting a different model. Link to comment

But seriously, I'd bet the fish was dead or sick/weak before he hit the pump. Link to comment
