Well I had been out of the hobby for about two years. I had to dismantle my CAD 22 because I was traveling. I am now back in Cali for a bit and couldn't resist the urge to start a new tank. But only this time I want to do things a little differently. I want to pick and choose what I want rather than the LFS guy telling me what to buy - I bought a ton of unnecessary stuff as a beginner. There are however more mistakes to make and a lot to learn :)

I originally wanted to keep it very simple with just water changes taking care of water quality. But ended ordering a sump, it just felt like a good place to put all the heating...chemipure...uv (if i get it)...chiller (if i need it) - hopefully it will still be *simple* . Here is what I have so far -

Tank: Ada 60-F - www.adana-usa.com

Lighting: Kessil A150W Sky Blue - www.marinedepot.com

Filter: Eshopps Wet/Dry Single sump - www.roxiespetden.com Rena xP1 canister filter - www.bigalspets.com

Sump Pump: Eheim 1250Water Pump - www.drsfostersmith.com

Additional Flow: Hydor Pico - www.marinedepot.com

Heater: Aqueon ProHeater - hwww.drsfostersmith.com Hydor ETH 201 In-Line Heater-200 W - www.bigalspets.com

Some of this stuff is already here. Some should be here by the end of the week.

Also got my own salt - Tropic Marin Pro Reef. Didn't have a lot of luck using LFS saltwater last time.

Updates 11/27/2011 -

Additional Flow: VorTech MP10 - www.marinedepot.com

UV Sterilizer: JBJ NanoZapp - www.marinedepot.com

Protein Skimmer: Biocube Protein Skimmer - www.petmountain.com

I had an ich outbreak about a month ago and took my fish out, got rid of the sand, did a 70% waterchange and reset. Added the nano zapp and now i have fish back in there. Been there for over a week. Seem fine so far. The UV is hooked to my pico pump and running at about 1/2 the flow - i.e. 100 gph. Not sure if it's doing anything but so far so good. The corals and the fish seem happy. I hate ich! I do like the BB look though. I have a white lining type thingy from target and put it under the tank for support - it's provides a bit of cushion. I don't use the uv and the skimmer all the time. The skimmer runs a few days after/before a water change. And since I went BB I have the mp10 running mid level without any sand storm issues. Seems to kick the gunk from under the rocks pretty good.

Great start! i love these ada's!

how do you like the light?!?!?!?!

Welcome back to the reef game!

I was just looking at your tank :) Man that is amazing!! Ya, the ada's are pretty neat. I wanted to drill mine, but I am scurred...

I haven't had it on much to judge the intensity still waiting on the pendant so will post pics when it gets here. The few seconds I had it on, I was expecting a little more blue perhaps - i heard they were more like 14k than 10k. But you can be the judge when i post the pics. I would rather it look natural than too blue.

DON BE SCURRED!

I had never drilled glass before, until I drilled my 60-F. I am really glad that I did it.

These guys will sell you everything you need. I went with them and couldn't have been happier. Plus they send you a free Fun Dip, you can't fakkin argue with that.

Good luck, tank looks great so far.

so the sump arrived last night and the overflow was taller than my tank and the sump was too big for the area i had designated for it. after going over various alternative locations and setups just to accommodate the sump, i finally mailed it back. I also returned the skimmer the return pump and heater I had ordered with this sump in mind. but it was a really neat sump.

now i am in the market for a canister filter. thinking Rena xP1 from here. Will also get the Hydor Eth 200 In-Line heater to keep stuff out of the main tank.

I hope to have enough flow in there with the canister return as well as the hydor pico running.

Finally got the Kessil set up. I didn't like it in the beginning - very spot light like at close distances and too bright for my shallow tank, i thought. But am getting used to it. I have not gotten used to LEDs yet I think, but running cool is more important at the moment. The Kessil is a solid build and runs fairly quiet - almost as quiet as the hydor pico. But it is quite powerful and runs quite cool. I place it about 5 inches above my tank and the water temp remains unchanged after hours.

The only problem I had with the Kessil was that it didn't ship with the mount. The gooseneck mount i ordered separately is not ideal but it does the job. I could have done a better job if I had any DIY skills - but I have none :) I just didn't want it attached to my tank glass - since the whole thing gets a bit heavy with the kessil attached and I was afraid it would crack my glass. So ended up getting a ceramic pot and clipping it to that...pics attached

was it really as simple as they make it look? hmm...i will have to do more research on this. What package did you order from them for your 60-F? Is the overflow box the right size - not too big?

Add a cactus in that pot and job's done =0)

LOL. i was just talking about that with the mrs.

I love all the 60-F popping all around NR I think we should have a contest in a year or so when all our tanks mature. I like the concept and everything so far looks great but I don't see how you are going to get a sump in there. How do you like the sky blue? I went with the ocean blue and even thou I’m not a big fan of bluish tanks I have to admit I’m loving it.

Nice! Another 60-F! Do you have to drill the tank to use the overflow box?

Yes, I am sorta regretting the oolite sand though. I always have a bare spot in the front. Working on it.

that is pretty sweet! do you have a side shot where we can see the width of the overflow? if i were to drill this it would have to be on the side since my setup is i want to be able to enjoy the tank from both sides. so it would have to be right below where the potteed kessil is :)

I just got done drilling my 60-F as well. It is not nearly as scary as I thought it would be. I did get a little bit of chip out on the inside though. Not anything that the rubber gasket won't cover. I got the same exact overflow kit as forrestp. The build quality is great and doesn't take up much room in the tank.

good to see you back. what else are you gonna do with this thing?

Thanks! I think the next thing I want to look into is controlling water quality in between changes and quicker coral growth. So ended up ordering calcium and alkalinity buffers as well as reef-roids. Has heard good things about the roids - anyone used them? I want to try that on my zoos. As far as stocking goes I think I am pretty set. Unless my midas blenny gets too agressive - he is acting a bit naughty after kicking out my fire shrimp from under a cave and jumps anyone who comes close to his cave now. Didn't know they could be agressive - especially he is a newcomer to the tank. Might trade him in for a yellow clown goby...don't know we'll see.
