Ocellaris Behaviour

Hi. I have a 29gal BioCube with live rock, red firefish, YWG and a pair of ocellaris clownfish.

The clowns mainly hang out in the upper corner by the pump return or the other corner by the Koralia. They sometimes leave these areas to bug the firefish and also at feeding time.

I assume this isn't too unusual - am I correct?

I have a small frogspawn but they do not host it. At night they float at the top rear of the tank.

Any suggestions on how I can persuade them to swim around more? I can't support anemones with my lighting.

They are really cute but I am thinking of trading them for 3 green chromis to add a bit of life and movement to the tank.

TIA

Do they host the powerhead?

I'm not sure what that means. They do hang around the pump return and the nano but how would they host it? Sorry if that's a silly question!

Yes clownfish have a tendency do have very odd habits.

Since they don't have an anemone in their environment, then generally host the next best thing. Since thy haven't hosted your frogspawn yet, they decided to host your powerhead. Hosting is where they stick around and rub/swim all over it.

I see. I've seem photos of them in anemones but didn't know they would adopt a powerhead. Crazy little dudes! Any suggestions how I might persuade them to give up the powerhead? I have been eyeing up a nice branching hammer coral on liveaquatics. Maybe my frogspawn is too small for them?

II have heard that putting them in a confined space (~2.5 gallons) with whatever you want them to host, they generally will.

Keep in mind you can't force them to do anything, but can give them a push in the right direction.

Maybe I can use my Walmart pico that arrives today to persuade them. They will probably just ignore me because they can!

So it sounds like I need to find them something else for them to host that they prefer and the might give up the powerhead. Maybe they need therapy. I know I do!

Thanks for the help!

Chances are you'll get a nice hammer/bta/frogspawn and they'll take to the thermometer/corner/zoas.

Clowns are totally weird and seem to do everything you don't want them to do :)

They host thermometers? That is odd!

Hey guys, your clownfish are probably still adjusting to their new home....also there is not a natural host for them in your tank SOMETIMES a euphyllia may host them, you need to let your tank mature a little longer, upgrade your lighting, and then get a bubble tip anemone, they are easy to keep and a natural host for your clowns....powerheads or thermometers are not going to host your clowns....do some research.....good luck!

Yep, mine LOVED the stick on thermometer until they found the xenia, then they moved from that to the frogspawn and that's where they've stayed. If I had to put my money on what's next, I'd say the return pump.
