Distilled water

Hi all,

This is my first post here. I am in the process of startin a 30G reef tank. Ive read in many places that you need to use RO/DI water for reefs. But, I am bit short on funds so its not possible to invest in an RO/DI system.

So i was thinking of using distilled water, or battery water. Its relatively cheap for me and is easily available. Also, I am from india so many terms we use here maybe different from terms used elsewhere.

Is this idea safe?

Anyone tried this before?

As long as their isn't any copper used in the distillation process (you can call the distillery) you should be fine. The Ph will be a little low but no big deal. I used distilled also.

May be different availability for you, but I find that local big box stores like Wal-Mart, or similar, have RO/DI water for around $0.30/gal. I would check around. Here distilled is around $0.80-1.00/gal.

GOod luck

I use distilled for top offs but my LFS has RO/DI for $.50 a gallon so I'm in luck. But I will check Wal-Mart to see if they have Gallons for $.50 or less. Would be nice for top off rather than buying cases of bottled water.

I use the distilled water from wallmart, purple cap, $0.80 per gal.

Be careful with LFS ro/di water. If they are not maintaining the unit properly, changing filters, it could be crap. LFS here couldn't answer questions about their setup...

He's in India. No walmart.

True. But I get distilled water for 10rupees/ liter, approx $0.08/G. And if i buy in bulk, then I can bargain to about 0.06$/G

I get them from automobile repair shops. They usually have their own system, big ones, and they bottle it to sell to truckers who refill their own batteries.

You're telling me there is someplace without a WalMart. Amazing!

Seriously, there is good info in the thread. No problems with distilled, but heed the copper warning.
